It depends on why the dog is coughing.Have you had it to a vet? If a dog is coughing bad enough to need cough suppressant, then it should see a vet.Coughing can be a sign of heart disease, pneumonia and other serious disorders.Your dog needs to see a vet.

Edit: OK,I have had dogs that needed cough syrup before, but I wanted to see if you had taken it to a vet.The dosage is 1 mg. per kilogram( 2.2 lbs). This is for Robitussin DM (dextromethorphan ONLY),which has 5 mg.of dextromethorphan per teaspoon. Since your dog is so small,I would just give it a 1/4 teaspoon every 6 hours or so.If the cough gets too bad, your vet can prescribe hycodan syrup, which is a narcotic,or he can give you Torbutrol, which really helps. I had two dogs with heart failure and they took Torbutrol at night for their cough.Steam and warm broth will help give the dog some relief, too. Good luck with your dogs.

Has your dog seen by a vet to determine the *cause* of his cough?

While it's true that you can use over-the-counter children's cough syrup to alleviate a dog's coughing if it's very severe, this is only used if the coughing is due to kennel cough (bortadella), not if the coughing is due to other reasons such as parasites, allergies, distemper, etc.

You need to see a vet to determine the cause of your dog's cough, then ask the vet whether cough syrup is appropriate in your situation and what type and dosage it should be.

You should never give a medication, including human medications that are very frequently used for dogs such as Benedryl for allergies, without consulting your vet and discovering the reason for the dog's condition first.

None. If he has a cough take him to a vet to determine the cause. He may have kennel cough or some other ailment. Cough syrup is not for dogs he could have reactions to this medication

Absolutly NONE!

With all the different kinds of cough syrup out there how do you know which one will do what to your dog. Only a vet can tell you what to do for your dog. coughing is a symtom of something wrong with your dog.
Your vet can tell you what it is and give you the proper meds for the dog. Nothing over the counter should be given with out vet approval first!

You don't know exactly what is causing this cough! Giving human medication, would be very risky, for a dog that is that small! You need to take your dog to the vet, find out exactly what is causing the cough, and the vet will give the proper medication for your dog. If you give your dog human medication and you give it the wrong kind or the wrong dose, you can kill your dog. That's not a chance I would take!!!

You should not give cough syrup to your dog, they do not get colds like humans. If your dog is sick take it to the vet, don't try home remedies that may make it worse.

If the vet told you to give cough syrup to your dog, then that is the person that should tell you the dosage to give your dog. Call your vet and ask.

I definitely reccommend going to a vet first *always*.

However, in the instance that this isn't possible, two good sites are:

I reccommend the vet first for two reasons. First, you want to be sure you are diagnosing the correct problem. Second, there is always the chance that your pet could have a reaction to a common medication, and the vet can take care of that right away. For example, my dog had a sever allergic reaction to a giardia vaccine, but fortunately, we were already at the vet, so they were able to take care of her right away.

Why would you want to give cough syrup to a dog? They aren't humans so you can't treat them with human cough syrup. If the dog is coughing take him to the vet so he can tell you what's wrong with him.

If the vet gave you antibiotics, then use those. Definitely do not use cough syrup, because it may not have the same effect on your dog than it would on a child. Bring her to the vet again, and get her checked out again.
