Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
Freddy Kruger my soul did take.

When my son refuses to obey, I say, "Don't make me get the thing!"
Of course, there is no thing. At first, he would be really nervous and do what he needed to do. He kept asking what the thing was, but I wouldn't tell him. He figured it out after a couple of times, but I still say it.
The difference is, there is a God and I didn't make the Bible up. The purpose of the Bible is not to make us behave, but to have a personal relationship with God. If you read the whole thing, you can hopefully see it's a love letter from God to us.
This is what Jesus did for us - John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Yes, I have made up fairytales for my niece/god-daughter.
Not much of a difference, I agree with your rationale...people being told hellish stories of all sorts, just to have them behave a certain way or basically, programmed out of fear (among other reasons, like the financial benefits of religion).

The difference is that with Christianity, you learn that none of us are good. We all suck !
We misbehave without even trying to, but often enough, we definitely are trying to.
So I'm sure they are still telling young children things like, "Jesus doesn't like it when you do that", but he doesn't like what any of us do at any time. The only good things we can do are those things He inspires us to do. That's why you might hear a Christian say, "Glory to God". Because the glory really is His.
So the made up stories do not reflect what the Bible really teaches. It never teaches us that we are 'good'. None of us are 'good'.

Yes. I did the Santa Claus thing with my boy until he was 8. After that, he was smart enough to get the obvious ridiculousness of the whole deal. I'd like to think he'll do the same thing with religion when he's old enough to understand. But that will be his decision.

Nah. I just beat their asses when they step out of line, lol. Seriously, I actually "talked" to my sons and reasoned with them to both motivate them, and get them to think for themselves. I can't be there with them 24/7, you know?

No. I've always been honest, I hate when people do that.
I'm failing as a parent if I had to do that.

Yeah, but religion doesn't make your face stay like that, though.
