for a couple who makes 70K combined income a year and has 20K in the bank for a down payment. Also, no debt and a few student loans (that get paid every month on time)

One person is also working on their master's (paid for buy their employeer) and will increase their income by about 15K-20K when completed (about 1.5 years)

I probably would spend no more than $10K--half my savings. DO NOT go into debt for a wedding, it's starting your marriage off in what is probably one of the worst possible ways to start off a wedding.

Another thing to consider is if your combined incomes equal $70K a year, then if you have an overly lavish wedding, many of your friends will feel uncomfortable, heck, YOU may even feel uncomfortable.

You can have a nice wedding--in most parts of this country--for $10K.

Just don't count on the money you don't yet have. When you are in love a small wedding with all the niceties can be just as romantic or more so than an extravagant wedding. I went to a wedding once and the bride and groom didn't know personally all of the people that were there. What a waste!

In my opinion, it totally depends on three things: where you wedding will be, how many guests you will have, and what your tastes are. You didn't mention any of these, so that makes it more difficult. I had a relatively simple wedding for about $10,000 for 75 guests in a non-city setting and that seemed just about perfect without cutting too many corners. If you are doing it in a city or destination place and/or you have a lot more guests than that, or you want "deluxe" everything, you may have to use your full $20,000.

My DF makes a very good salary and I make peanuts, and Ive got 70k in student debt. We're budgeting 4500$ for 50 people, but know it might go a little bit over.

For 10k, you can do wonders!!

You can get alot of "band for your buck" for $10,000! The other people are right. Don't go into debt for a wedding. Because you will be paying for it years from now. And it's a one day event...and who wants to be paying for a one day event for the next 2-3 years. I sure didn't. I hope you have a memorable day.:)

It really depends on what you want. I'd not spend more than $10K, but I'm a relatively 'simple' person so I'd probably spend much less.

i would say between 20,000 and 30,000, depends on what you can afford and if people are going to contribute to your funds - also, how many people are you inviting? the cost can change dramatically on a per person basis (especially the reception and bar)
