I'm a female veteran, and honestly, I've never had a hard time finding work. My suggestion is to consider the field you are trying to get into and what your skill base is. That could be what is preventing you from finding 'decent' work.
Also, I have to ask, what is your definition of 'decent' work? You might have a very different definition than I do. Do you mean, advanced positions (upper level management) or do you just mean something that pays more than minimum wage?
Good luck in your job search.

It's not just the females !
Empoyers today are only interested in maximising profit. Most hire fresh meat from college/high school part time so they can pay minimum pay and no benefits.
You think it's hard as a "veteren, try being a retiree at only 40 years old. They don't want to pay for my years of training and experiance if they can get away with hiring fresh meat.

its not just females.....my husband is seperating in may of 08 and has already been turned down for over 20 jobs......i however have been a stay at home mother for the last 7 years for the most part, but because i have a college degree (even though its 11 years old) i posted my resume on monster and hotjobs and within a week had a well paying job being held for me for when he gets out. one job that did actually show interest in him told him that he has to have a full psychiatric evaluation by a doctor of their choosing.....at his own expense, before he can be considered.

As A Veteran who has worked in Human Resources...It's not just females, although they are discriminated against more frequently in gaining employment especially, if she does not "look" like GI Jane. Employers in America would rather hire Illegals.

Sadly, even our servicewoman are still considered second class. Harrassment and rape occur quite frequently. If you for example working 16 hour shifts on an aircraft carrier flight deck and being responsible for the safe launch and recovery
of multimillion dollar fighter attack jets is admirable. Unfortanately, if you do not leave with or pursue at least a bachelor's degree your enlisted service is not going to help a whole lot sometimes in civilian jobs
