It is safe to say that a person who doesn't lack inner strength, and doesn't require comfort or support (beyond what they can get from their friends and family) has no reason to become a Christian?

Not everyone always needs inner strength, comfort or support. But, there are times in our lives when no one else can understand what we are going through except for Christ. He walked this worth and went through everything from being worshipped to being spit on. He knows what it feels like to be human so He is the only one who can truly comfort you and give you that inner strength when you need it.

That person who doesnt 'require comfort or support' beyond what they can get from their family or friends will inevitably face a day...when neither family nor friends can get you through a situation. Atheists admit...by their own might, they could not convince someone considering suicide...to not do it. Family and friends can only go so far-to comfort and keep you. Belief in Jesus is not just for the good times...He is for the times when you cant find the answer, no drink can make the hurt go away, no hug from a friend can solve the problem. Jesus can do things for you that no person...not even mommy and daddy, can do.

So I pray (since you are an avowed atheist) that you never have a time when that strength is tried to the limit because my guess is, sadly you'll end it with a overdose of Excedrin rather than turn to the One who created you.

Most people don't become Christians simply for support, strength, comfort, etc. We do so because we recognize that we are sinners and that Jesus is the only who appears to most convincingly address that issue. There is nothing wrong with strengt, comfort, support, etc but I question anyon who suggests they simply get it from their families. As great as families are for helping in the areas mentioned they are imperfect and often in need of more support than they can offer. There are issues in peoples lives that families are not always equipped to address, which is why people at times need help from professionals and quite often try to fill those voids with other pursuits. Drugs, sex, and a whole other host of remedies to try and put a bandaid on a open wound. You see it isn't just Christians who hurt. But few are honest enough to admit it and try and deal with it.

No. I did not require support from anyone and I have plenty of inner strength. In my case, I was studying the history of Christianity in order to better poke fun at Christians. I came across the early writings and realized it was not what I had been taught all my life.

If you are angry at what Christians proclaim in their own hate and ignorance, I agree. Please do not confuse what Jesus Christ taught with what most modern Christians do.

There are plenty of reasons to be Christian and hopefully someday you will find that out on your own. I know that nothing I can tell you will really make much difference.

not necessarily,

there are tons of other reasons why someone might feel the need to belong to a group.

maybe they want to shave time off thier sentance, maybe they feel that it is a place to meet nice singles, maybe they want to have some activity to do on sundays and don't like football, maybe they are interested in doing charity work and the only charities nearby are christian ones.

there could be tons of other reasons. just because a person doesn't lack inner stregth doesn't mean there is no reason to join a religion. lack of inner stregth can be one of many reasons why a person would be duped into a life of lies.

Accepting Christ as savior is about realizing one has sinned in life, and that the only way to have that sin forgiven is to repent of it and believe in Jesus. That is why Jesus came, to seek and save that which was lost, us.

Jesus gives abundant life here, as well. A joyful life. Full of all those things you asked about.

It's not about feeling good, it's about being saved for all eternity. I would never say to a person, get to know Jesus so you can have inner strength. That is something God gives us when we follow Him, all those things. What is most important about knowing Christ is being saved from your sins.

Hello,
The bible says that we have all, all of us, sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins; so that we would not have to pay that debt ourselves in eternal hell.
The strength and comfort of the Lord comes from Isaiah 61; the Lord Jesus came to bind up the broken hearted, to set the captives free; you can read this scripture.
People believe that they are "good" in and of themselves and that they have qualities and attributes that Christ did not have to die for on the cross. The fact is every evil thought is sinful; so this sin alone tells each person that they are in fact a sinner.
Jesus came to free us of our sin; free us of a guilty conscience. A guilty conscience is brought about by the realization that we have in fact sinned. Until our conscience is awakened to the reality of sin, we are living in a false reality about ourselves as human beings on earth.
The weight that Christ lifts off of us in many regards has to do with the "world's standards". The Lord can free a person of stereotypes and persecutions and personal attacks. The Lord frees us from this type of heavy bondage. Curses only hurt us if we get in agreement with them. The world says that you have more value if you are physically attractive. That is nonsense. An ugly person does not have to carry around the heavy bondage of the lie that says they have no or less value as a human being than an attractive person does. There are many many of the world's useless standards that the Lord frees us of. This is a comfort.
The strength the Lord gives us in the power not to sin. Sin destroys us little by little over time, regardless of whether we can actually see that process happening to us or not. When people sin against each other they are destroying each other. It's little by little, over time, we slowing destroy each other thru sin. If we are free from sin, we destroy no one. No one is ever destroyed by the truth, which is full, pure, love.
Strong doctrine is very hard to comprehend and understand unless a person comes and actually accepts Christ as Savior and Lord and His Spirit comes to live in their hearts.
One can say that people are freed from addictions and sins without God but that too is a lie. Any time any good thing happens on the earth, God's hand was involved. The bible says that every good and perfect gift comes down from heaven. Everything that "lives" is "alive" on the earth is maintained by God. When the time comes and the world as a whole turns away from God, God will turn His face from the earth and then it will begin to implode on itself. This process has begun thru global warming. All things that live and are seen have a source of life that is unseen and that source is God Himself. For He is Spirit and He is life. For the word was God and the word was with God, from the beginning. God is the beginning and the end, the first and the last, the Alpha and the Omega. God Bless you.

Christianity's purpose is not solely created to satisfy people's needs. Although the extremely selfish among us will not be able to understand this in any depth or detail, Christianity is based on serving OTHERS and God. It's an attitude of "Ask not what your (religion) can do for you, but what you can do for your (religion)."

Only believers know the feeling...Kind of like if my head hurt and I told you it hurt, you could not feel it nor could you see it. Only I would know what that feeling was like, same way with Jesus only a good feeling not like my head hurting. There is more to Jesus then any one person or thing on this earth can make you feel and believers know what I am talking about and non believers don't and that is okay.

That's your choice. If you are completely fulfilled as a human being and don't feel the need for more then that's fine. You must also respect that others may not feel the same way and are looking for a higher fulfillment.
