Obviously he got there accidentally to try and find new routes to India but why else? He couldn't have planned that huge trip just to do that.

Well actually yes, that is the main reason. He believed that there was a quicker way getting to the spice islands by sailing west. Although he unintentionally landed in the now Americas, he realized that there were valuables here too, such as gold.

That's just it. He was looking for a new route to India. Finding a new route would be an enormous discovery back then when India was becoming a trading powerhouse. Logistics even to this day is one of the top priorities for companies and countries alike. When he landed here in North America, he thought that the native americans were Indians, thus the popular usage of the term "Indian" to describe the inhabitants. He went back with much more than he was expecting, which is fortunate for us.

He got lost and, being a man, was not about to stop and ask for directions. I suppose you could say we're lucky since there is no place this side of heaven I'd rather be than in the USA.
