When you get out of the shower in the morning, look at your back in the mirror. You will not find DOORMAT written on your back. Never ever let anyone treat you like one. Stand up for yourself and demand to be treated with respect.
Do not fall into the trap of believing you can change someone. You can't. People can change themselves but only if they want to. You can't change them. If you meet a guy who is always broke and between jobs and dabbles in drugs and likes to get drunk every night and treats you badly well guess what - he'll be the same 5 years, 10 years from now.
Both my daughters are strong, independent women who have married well. They are both RN's and you'd better believe the doctors respect them. I told them that if I ever caught them letting themselves being used like a doormat I'd give them a swift, hard kick in their backside. At 33 and 30 they still know I mean it.
