You are correct.A lot of religions are based on fear.
Christianity for example.Worship god or else face an eternity in torment. If that isn't supposed to induce fear then I don't know what is.

Your question is interesting, because you obviously want to imply that being scared or concerned about what happens after death is a lame reason to believe in religion, but a concern about what happens after death is an important aspect of religion for many people.

I think we are often sheltered from death now, and that we do not take death seriously. When people you know and love die, it is difficult to believe that they have just become nothing.

I think that karen! says it all. " I believe so that I dont fear dying". Essentially thats saying that you're afraid of dying and you're using the crutch of some superstitious mumbo-jumbo to help you deal with it.

Death is fairly unpalatable to a great many people and religion meets the need by promising eternal life.

Its a very good piece of marketing. Unfortunately its just a complete load of tosh.

Far better to accept the fact that you're just a very temporary bundle of chemical molecules and make the most of what life you do have. Rather than some non-sensical belief that you'll be going to heaven and will live forever.

Fear is not a good reason why you obey; when you put love in what you believe, it is easier to understand why are we suppose to have something to believe. For example: does it feel better to obey your parents because you enjoy the work or because of fear????(something to ask yourself.) Those people who thinks life is something to enjoy by smoking, partying, drinking, etc. because you can only experience it once, they never think why is there a life? there must be a purpose that is hidden behind it.
Well the problem now is which one to believe in? which ever your religion is, try to understand what the Holy Book is talking about. Is it just a collection of stories of those who lived before us? What can we learn from that? If God sent us to this world for some purpose, the Holy Book should be like a "manual book" about how we should live our life to reach the goal. Why would He send us to this world and tell us about how our descendants lived? Now think about how old this world is, and now we are living as the generation of the 21st century.
It is hard to believe in something that we did not suspect, may be the historians lied about the whole history? May be they changed some words in th Bible, Koran, etc. So we need faith in seeking the truth.
what ever you believe in, the most important thing is to think about what we are doing right now. Going to "heaven" is not our goal: it is the result. Our goal is to live a good life.
To conclude my answer i will say,"PLEASE READ MY ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!PLZ!!!!!!!!!!!"IT WILL BE USEFUL FOR THOSE WHO IS SEEKING FOR THE TRUTH"

Sadly, that's the reason for a lot of people. They totally miss out on the relationship they should be having with God. Those are the people that know nothing about God as a comforter, friend, father, provider, healer, etc. They have only learned to fear the outcome of their eternal life instead of how to access the kingdom and God while still here on earth.

Religion has its very root in our psychological makup, it is a result of our fears, hopes, and desires all rolled into a made up reality to explain what eludes us. A christian friend of mine put it to me like, "better safe than sorry" there is no reward for not beleiving other than a better understanding of life, so i think many people who are not fundamental take the religious road as it is the most logical way to go so long as it doesnt interfere with you life, (if there is no god, i die so what, if there is one i go to heaven for bieng faithfull, yay) but the idea that it might be true and not beleiving is a sure way to hell is too risky for them

Lots of people do. They usually call themselves fundamentalists.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. Maybe it's better than not believing at all. But it's an immature spirituality.

Paul reminded us that when we were children it was all right to think and act like a child, but once we grow up, we need to "put childish ways aside."

This kind of belief becomes bad when it never matures into a belief because of the direct experience of God's love. This is the sticking point for some fundamentalists, who discount love of others and prefer to focus on condemnation and judgment.

because people and teachers say that the Bible, Koran, etc. said that we will be proud of ourselves on earth and on heaven when we do what God or Allah told us to do...but the people who do bad thing, will have good times on earth, but not on hell. oh ya, we really know what if there IS a heaven or hell, my dad told me that the Koran tells that it's a place where people is asked what they did...only if u could KEEP A SECRET THEN I WILL ASK my dad to show you more of this...if you would like to know how I know about the Bible and Koran, I'm a Muslim who goes to another country with my family(I'm not a mature as yet, I'm still in school--elementary). My dad's boss sent my dad and his family, including me, to Suriname, South America for my dad to help the Indonesian Embassy. oh ya, I'm an Indonesian too. then suddenly my dad knows there r no Islamic school in Suriname. so, I went to Christian school and studied what the Bible says. well, I think that's all to say, if you wanna mail me to know more, just add me and send me message, then I will know what to do. see ya around Yahoo...

Something to think about...

What if the reason religion exists because the founders of those religions directly experienced God - and it was not a hallucination or imagination...it is reality that God exists.

Something to think about isn't it?

It would be more correct to say that they believe so that they aren't afraid of death. Almost equivalent statements.

There's many reasons people have religion, and none of them are because the religion is fact. If it was fact, there would be no dispute.

Not really.

Maybe there ARE those who do, but at least in my OWN case, it's not so.

I was NOT raised in a Christian home. In fact, I was taught that Jesus was a liar, perhaps confused or self-deluded, probably a deceiver of sorts, but above all else, dead.

When I had an encounter with Jesus Christ, I had to change my opinion about Him, when He showed me His great Love and mercies towards me. The incidents that led up to this is too long for this Q&A forum, so I'll just leave it at that.

It's amazing how once you actually meet Someone, you can no longer deny His existence.

Or, in the words of one song, "I once was lost, but now I'm found; was blind, but now I see."
