I am so upset. I took my two dogs to get spayed and neutered yesterday and now I am not too sure I did the right thing. I thought it was the responsible thing to do (being that one is a boy and the other a girl) but when I mentioned it to someone today (after seeing the cones around their heads) I am starting to think I did something terrible. The person told me that I had ruined my dogs lives and that there were other ways of keeping them from having puppies. The person told me if I were to like it of someone took me to the doctors to get me fixed! I am so sad now. Did I do the right thing?

Thank you for your support, I really need that right now. I am so sad but at least now I could feel better because I feel like I have done the right thing. Those things that I were told still get to me though.

What you did is right. I really don't see why the vet put on e-collars. Out of many spay & neuters I have had done on dogs none as ever had to wear the e-collar & not once was there a problem!!

Of course you did the correct thing. There are so many unwanted and unloved animals in the world today because of the mentality of the person who said you ruined your dogs lives. You just made their lives a whole lot better. They will be much less aggressive, and much more lovable pets. The cones are temporary so they don't get at their stitches and are in no way harmful to them. Also pets who have been spayed and neutered are less likely to run away. Don't believe what others say - you did the responsible thing by getting them fixed. Cudos to you!!!!!!

The last I heard their is no birth control for animals and no matter how hard you try a female dog in heat is more likely to get pregnant then not. As far as adults getting fixed we do it everyday and come out just fine.
You did the right thing.
Maybe this person who stopped you should go to the shelter and see how many puppies and kittens are put down. I think spaying and neutering is the better option.
I sit every weekend with animals that don't have a home and they are not finding them. Homes for animals are running out. Maybe this person can come up with a better solution, I'd sure like to hear it.
THANK YOU FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING AND NOT LISTENING TO HER.

Yes you did the right thing...not only will this keep you from having an unwanted litter...which you really don't want if the dogs are siblings... but it also improves the dogs health. Prostate cancer is the number one cause of death in male dogs and now there is no way that your dog will suffer from it. Also the male will be less aggressive. Some people think it's wrong but their reasons are not coming from the right place.

The person who told you that is a 19th century sadist and suffering delusions. You improved your animals' chances for an overall happy and healthy life, free of unncessary distractions, ready to be 100% focused on you and their lives as pets. For whatever reason that schmuck chose to pass judgment on YOU is not your fault. You deserve no criticism, only praise for being a responsible and caring pet owner.

Now- your dogs are going to itch for a few days- that's what the cones are for. The itching is worse than the pain. Pain meds will take care of the soreness, but if you've ever had poison ivy, you know nothing really helps. Stitches feel like this. Don't feel sorry for them with the cones. Get your camera- dogs with cones are hilarious! Give them lots of treats and lots of love and before you know it the cones will be off and you'll have 2 happy healthy dogs back to the business of being pets- what they're there for.

Spaying and neutering are the right thing. I've had dogs for years and can't think of any other way to prevent puppies. I also think it is worse, particularly for the male, to leave them fertile and not let them breed; sexual frustration you know.
You did the correct and responsible thing. Everyone should spay and neuter if they do not intend to breed, and only the best specimens of the breeds should be bred.

That person has the IQ of a rock you cant listen to everything you hear because alot of people don't know much when it comes to dogs not being mean just telling the truth. You did the right thing i wish more people were as responsible as you. GREAT JOB.

well there are other way of preventing pregnacy, true - but they all involve confining one or both dogs for 3+ weeks twice a year - not fun for them or you. AS far as spay neutering ruining their lives - I doubt it. there is a slight increase in chances of a few health problms but balanced by decrease in others. But to be honest it is nearly invisible in its effect on the dogs daily life... people project the person wouldn't like being fixed so ...... funny lots of people DO have vasectomies & tubal ligations hummmm......

Of course you did the right thing. That is what being a responsible pet owner is all about. To many unwanted animals are put down every year.

I would be extremely curious to hear "what other methods" your informant is on about?

Thank you for caring about your animals.

You did do the right thing ... by spaying and neutering your animal not only are you preventing pregnancy but your preventing a numerous amount of other problems like:
Males: Prostate and testicular cancer and prevention of roaming around the neighborhood seeking out females to impregnant (avoid hit by cars etc)
Females: Pyometras (pus in uterus that can kill them) and other types of cancers
Just to name a few
Believe me you did the right thing
as for the cones .. you dont need to keep them on the entire time .. just when they are not supervised.

Believe me you did a GREAT thing! :)
