Honestly, I don't know anymore, since different people have different hang-ups, and teenagers in general seem to have the most random insecurities.
I thought that calling a guy "hot" always sounded gay, but times might have changed. Guys used to hate being called "gentle" because it sounded gay, but that might have changed also.
"Handsome" should still be OK, I suppose.

It would be appropriate if he was handsome. Being handsome is different than being cute or hot or sexy. When I hear handsome I think of someone with strong, manly, good looking features. When I hear cute I think of a guy with boyish good looks.
For some reason teenage boys and girls don't really like being called cute. It's more associated with being younger and when you're a teen the last thing you want people to think is that you're just a kid. Exception- for girls, when you're talking about a cute outfit or something.

It's a little outdated, sounds like something a parent or older person would call a younger guy.
I think cute is fine. Nothing wrong with saying that.
Basically any compliment is meant with good intentions and should be appreciated regardless!

I think that moms call there sons handsome. I think that 16 year old guys would rather you just say that they look good or are hot(depending on your age, dont call someone your sons age hot)

It wouldn't be any worse than calling a 16 yer old girl "cute". Though "under-age hottie" would be more appropriate. haha. Anyway, being called "cute" is a compliment and anyone who gets all wound up over it needs mental help.

every guy will love being called handsome, it's a great compliment and if they say that they don't like being called handsome...they're lying.
as far as cute goes, most guys like being called cute (so long as it is a girl who says it) though they will never admit it in front of their friends in order to keep up a 'tough guy' persona.

It is ok to call a young guy both things just as long as you are saying them in a positive way, meaning not being smart like saying he is cute like he is gay or something. Both of these words are complements.
