My husband recently received a Citi Mastercard in the mail that he did NOT apply for. It came in a plain envelope and appears to be a legitimate card. Is this legal? I don't know who to call. I don't want to close the account - I want it to have never existed!

I HAVE read everything. The account has been opened. I came with a card member agreement and gives you a number to call if you want to CLOSE the account. The card does need to be activated, but it appears that the account has been opened. I am always getting pre-approved OFFERS, but I've never received an actual card.

This happens all the time and if you call to close it they can close it and make it like it never existed it will be removed from credit reports and will not effect your husbands or your credit score.

Read everything over carefully. Why is it that nobody bothers to read anymore?

Banks send out pre-approved cards all the time, that are no good until you take some action. Read the materials that came with the card and understand what it is. If you're not sure, call the credit card company.

I'd be more worried about identity theft than this. That's a card you'd never see but someone would be using it in your name. You should be taking advantage of the free credit report you're allowed once a year, and I'm not talking about freecreditreport.com, where it's free only if you sign up, for a fee after 30 days, to one of their deals, and they hope you forget to cancel within the 30 days.

A credit card company called me on the phone I said that i would look in to it just send me the information they said if I wanted it to just activated if not then don't, so I looked at it and said no I don't want it but when I looked at me credit report there it was not activated but an open account . So from know on I'm not telling them anything over the phone because they are greedy and conniving. I will never activated it so they will never get one cent out of me. For now the open account is raising my score but when they close it one day for being inactive that will drop it.

Immediately call the credit card company and tell them
NO ONE APPLIED and cancel the card, then put a fraud alert on your Credit Reports ASAP.

They need consent. He would have to call and activate it (if it is legitimate).
