I have been thinking for a long time about the possibility of joining the airforce. I have not, as of yet, spoken to a recruitor because I don't want go until I really know if it is a good decision to make. I am married and 20 years of age. My questioin is, what are the options for my wife how will it benefit us as a family and are there ways for us not to be away from each other for such long periods of time. For example can she get housing not to far of the base and if so would i be able to visit, or would she be able to visit me. Any information that I get will be very helpful. Once again thank you for your time and I am looking forward to you answers.

First, you would benefit from talking to a recruiter, with your wife present to get better informed. You are not obligated to sign anything by sitting in the chair across the desk.
When you go to boot camp, you will not be able to see your family. Once you are done and sent to your first duty station, you can either get base housing (some are on base, others are off base) or you can rent/buy nearby. Being a military family is beneficial in that you will have affordable medical/dental benefits, life insurance if the unthinkable happens, a great support system and career training. Just remember, this is something that you and your wife must decide TOGETHER! Even though you are the one ultimately signing on the dotted line, she will be enduring military life as much as you will be.

My first question to you is.... Have you spoken to your wife concerning your thoughts about joining the AF or any military service? If not...do it. When you were a single man.... you would be committing yourself to a term of service. You would live on base...eat on base....so on and so on. BUT...when you are married... you are committing your entire family to moving every so often.... potentially living on less money than you could be making in the civilian world. I don't know if the AF is in any of the hot zones currently but that must be taken into consideration as well.

If the answer is yes you have...then....here you go.

She will not be with you while you are at basic. That will be you and you alone. She will not be with you during your schools that are training you in your MOS...UNLESS it is longer than a certain period of time. After you report to your permenant duty station, she can join you and you guys will live either in base housing or in an apartment out in town. That is how it works. You will receive BAH which is an allowance to assist in paying for living out in town. If you live in base housing...it is paid for by them taking your BAH. She will be able to shop on base...but often the prices out in town are better.

If you go overseas...depending on your rank...she may be able to accompany you...depending on where you go. If she can't go...she must vacate base housing because the housing is reserved for people stationed at that base. Most dependants go home while a service man/woman is overseas.

Hope some part of that helped.

Good luck.

While you are in basic training, you will not be able to see your wife, but you will once you graduate. You will be able to live together once you get stationed wherever they send you, you can apply for base housing, but I would get something off base since it's usually full and there's a waiting list. Your wife can go to school, they have great deals on loans and such for military wives. She also can get a job, if she doesn't want to go to school. Good luck in whatever you choose!

You will not be allowed to see your wife until the end of boot camp. After that you will be sent to your primary school depending on your job. If the school is long enough she will be able to join you and the air force will pay you a little extra money for housing and food.

After that you will be sent to your permanent duty station where your wife will be able to join you. Again you will be given extra money for housing and food. If you're lucky you will be given base housing, which is free.

All in all plan on being apart initially for 3 to 4 months.

depends on what you mean.. she will NOT be allowed to join you while you are in BCT or in AIT. after you get stationed at a permanent duty station, you will be living together, either in MFH on base, or using BAH off Base. This assumes, of course, that you get Accompanied Orders( not all duty stations allow families: Korea and Diego Garcia being the two most prevalent ones) base housing wait lists vary by location, paygrade and bedroom entitlement and range from one day to 2 plus years.
