We bought it when we got our dog and man it is so worth it!! Last vet bill was 168.00 we got back like 118.00. Only cost us 30.00 per month!! What are you reason for not getting it?

Here is the break done from my side;
Total Insurance cost:
So far our dog is 8 months old we have had the insurance since he was 8 weeks old
march to now has cost 240.00 in payments
Total vet cost are 865.98
We have got back 659.23
Seems like it is worth it to me. We have a 500.00 vet appiontment coming up and I talked with the insurance company and they are coving everything but 100.00 of the appointment

You have to do research, my vet dose not take the insurance I pay the bill and submit it to the insurace myself VIP pet insurance is the best one and they cover just about everything even check ups and Flea protection like frontline

Good question, We have it for both of our dogs. I guess a lot of people have not heard of it. My in-laws just had a dog put down after $8000 of cancer treatments. Only after the second surgery did the vet give them the literature on it. Needless to say they now have it for the three remaining dogs and they have the other dogs on food with out preservatives to prevent fiascoes like that.

Hi There
You know what I so love my pet insurance But here is the issue......
The area I live in has allot of Vets as we are mainly farm land and so we require large animal vets and here is the kicker ( NO Pun Intended) they do not accept pet insurance I have to drive well over a hour to go to a Vet that will accept Insurance
I have it on My 2 parrots and my 7 Pomeranian's and 2 Yorkshire Terriers
So I think to answer your question allot of people would love to have it as it is a great thing but finding a vet who will accept it is a hard thing to do so it is just easier to pay the vet bill than to do what I have to do Travel such a long distance Especially now with Gas Prices the way they are.
I hope this helps you Better understand
Take Care

This is a good topic. I feel for some people that pet insurance is a good idea. If your budget allows for the $30 a month, but a potential emergency would break the bank... do it. I would tend to suggest that you set up an account for your dog that you use for emergencies. At $360 a year multiplied by the life of the dog (let's say 12 years) equals out to be $4,320.00. You may never have dip into that account. If the money isn't used... it's still yours! Plus the interest you gain. If you do have the funds, or the ability to get the funds, insurance may not be the best idea. Good for you being a responsible pet owner!

Because it's a rip-off! I'm glad you were actually able to cash in on your insurance, but when I had it for my dog, it seemed like everything he went to the vet for was conveniently "not covered." They didn't pay for his heartworm meds (about $120 a year), nor did they contribute anything for his annual checkup and distemper booster. He developed a cyst on his paw, between his toes, and I had to have the vet biopsy it to make sure it wasn't a tumor. Do you think pet insurance covered that? NOOOOO! And then when he got an ear infection, do you think I received a red cent back from the pet insurance company for the $200 worth of ear drops and antibiotics I had to buy for him? Um, nope! All in all, I had it for 5 months at $25 a month, equaling $125. On top of that, it cost me about $600 in vet bills that were not covered- such a waste. These days I just put the money I would have paid the pet insurance company into a savings account and just withdraw whatever I need when he goes to the vet. It makes more sense to me.

I looked into for awhile and then asked my vets, and my vets told me that it is not worth it. They said I would be better off putting the monthly insurance payment aside each month and saving it. Only because most of the insurances owuld not cover my concers and that you have to pay up front and then get reinbursed later. Which is most people's problem they do not have the money to pay at the time.

because its not cost effective.. think about what you are saying from an economics standpoint..
you go to the vet what, every 6 months? lets argue that you go every 6 months-.
2 trips to vet per year at 168.00each = 336.00
you get back 2x $118.00 =$236.00
total cost to you: $100.00
you paid $30 a month, for 12 months for insurance =$360.00
so, it would be cheaper for you, unless your pet needs something big, and goes to the vet at 6 month intervals like the vast majority of normal healthy dogs do... its cheaper to NOT have the insurance.. cheaper by $24 granted, but cheaper nonetheless...

I have four dogs and to be honest it isn't worth me getting insurance. What I do is have a 'Vet Fund' into which I put money each month. Luckily the only time I have needed it was when my b'tch got an infection after whelping, which wouldn't have been covered by pet insurance anyway.
If I had one dog only though I would definately get it insured.

I agree with it completely now that we have horrendous vet bills (our dog is blind, diabetic, and has thyroid problems--we spent about $180.00 on her just last week). But most people don't want to admit that their pets could develop something serious, and many will only take them to the vet for their annual shots, which isn't as expensive as the insurance.

thats 360.00 a year
Dog that stays relatively healthy spends less than that at the vet each year. Usually around 100.00 for shots. Not all procedures are covered or covered in full. Plus you have to hassle with sending it in and waiting to get refunded. We have ZERO clients that utilize the insurance in our clinic. The best bet is to do preventative maintenance like 6 mo checkups and annual dentals with regular grooming and parasite prevention. It all comes out to about the same $$$ in most cases.

My girl is 13 years old, and the premiums outweigh the cost of her meds (which aren't covered anyway due to pre-existing conditions).
If we had a young dog, then yes, I would be much more likely to get pet insurance.
