I really wouldn't suggest You've got a friend in me. Its a nice song but kind of sad. How about Mariah Carey's Anytime you Need a Friend? It's still slow but a little more upbeat.
One of my friend's came in to a song similar to Vanilla Ice.. the just went and sat down, so it was short lived.. I think it was played later in the night as well. They had the couple's toasts, then the first dance, group dance and then all the other traditional dances.. then dinner.
I still say do it the way you want. If you really want Vanilla Ice, go with that.. if not (and you said 80s) look at some New Kids on the Block or some old school Madonna.

The songs you're talking about are definitely love songs, which doesn't really fit with a bridal party dance. Do a friend song, unless you're going to let the bridal party dance with their own dates. Some people might be uncomfortable dancing with the person they escorted down the aisle, especially if they don't really know or like that person. Some good upbeat friend songs are "You've Got a Friend in Me" (Keb Moe), "You're My Best Friend" (Queen), and "We Are Family" (Sister Sledge). Or, just do an upbeat song like "Celebration" (Kool and the Gang). I'd avoid slow songs. I know I'd feel awkward if I was forced to slow dance with some guy in a bridal party.

How about "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls? It's sort of a nice message for a wedding- "If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends, men can't last forever, but friendship never ends." That is a very funny song that also is a good "girl power" anthem, and tell your DJ that if he doesn't play what YOU want to hear at your own wedding, you'll have no problem replacing him with someone who will!!!

That's What Friends Are For. It is a foursome who does it, one of them is Dionne Warwick. It is slow enough for a group dance, and it is upbeat. Not exactly funny but nice.
