This is the first time she's gone in heat and she is 9 months. She is constantly licking and sometimes she will sit on my foot and when I move it she yelps as if it hurts.

Yes, get her spayed and then she won't go through this again. Also, keep her away from any intact male dogs.

dogs usually stay in heat about 10 days and for the first time it can be painful.u can try given her about 1/4 teaspoon of children's benedryl about every 4-6 hrs.it will make her drowsy and she will sleep through the pain.u can try a warm heating pad on low covered with a blanket for her to lye on. doggie diapers aren't cheap so i have bought a cheap bag of baby diapers and put on and cut a hole out for tail. u may have to take some good tape and tape across the tabs.about two weeks after she goes out of heat get her spayed. if u can't afford and are approved ur local humane society sometimes help foot the bills for spaying and neutering to qualified applicants.and bye all means keep her away from other dogs. a male dog can smell a female in heat for miles.

You can get her dog panties to wear inside the house, so there's no blood dripping on the floor. During this time, make sure you don't let her approach any males or leave her with a male who is not neuter unsupervised. After the heat is over, bring her to the vet to have her spayed. You don't need to worry any of these after spaying her.

she will lick to keep herself clean, but dont understand why she yelps when you move your foot.

The vet wont spey her until she has finished her season unless she is ill. Watch out for a pyo too, my youngest girl had a pyo at 9 months, the day after she finished her season -which is very rare, but not impossible, so I would get her checked out by your vet.

Spay her. The last thing the world needs is another cocker spaniel or cocker mix.

There's not a lot you can do to make her "comfortable" but you can get her spayed after this so she wont go through this again.

Do not let her out off leash, or unsupervised period and keep her away from ALL male dogs that are not neutered.
