I am wondering why, since Christmas has been celebrated as the birthday of Jesus Christ since around the third century, some people are only now getting around to telling us that they are offended by this, since it is a Christian holiday?
So, now, instead of letting different groups honor their own holidays in their own way (Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Yule, etc), we are supposed to shove them all under the umbrella term "Winter Holidays". Well, I suppose at least that gives atheists an excuse to celebrate along with people of faith...as if anybody really minded before, anyhow.
But tell me, what will you do about other Christian holidays, like Saint Valentine's Day, or Saint Patrick's Day?
Will lovers bring "February candy" to their sweeties? Will we say "be my pre-spring gal"?
Or may I, as a Christian, still say "be my Valentine"?
Will the Irish have to drink their green beer out of March steins, in order that atheists can drink along with them?
Just how shall we handle these things??

I never quite agreed with those who are against the term "merry Christmas" or did not want a nativity scene in a public place.

BTW I am not a Christian.

As long as you do not infringe on my freedom of religion why should I care if you celebrate yours in public?

Valentine's Day is the Christian co-optation of the Lupercalia, an old Roman holiday.

You may already have heard how Christmas is a co-opted holiday. Believe those reports. Even the Catholic Church admits it.

The whole "Merry Christmas" thing was a tempest in a tea pot.

But then, so was the big stink raised about using the words "Happy Holidays."

It's actually based on the cult of Mithras, a Roman sun god. Dec 25th is his birthday, not Jesus's. Still it does not bother me to hear Merry Christmas, but I'm sure it would bother you if I wished you a Merry Mithrasmas, wouldn't it?

Actually, the original movement to not call Christmas Trees Christmas Trees (and Christmas Cards Christmas cards, etc) came from CHRISTIANS who were pointing out, quite rightly, that there is nothing Christian about those things.

Most people in this country are Christian, so it goes to reason that Merry Christmas covers just about anybody. It shouldn't be offensive.

"...what will you do about other Christian holidays..."
LOL, it's so amusing to see the uneducated in action. Xmas, Valentines Day = Pagan holidays. Go back and check your history.
