how much torque should it take? i have wired the pulley to keep it from turning but when i crank on the wrench the engine moves...still trying to get to the water pump

Use an impact gun,air or electric should get it off,normal thread(counter-clockwise to loosen).

Remove the starter motor and wedge the flywheel ring gear to stop the engine turning or if you are careful lock a vice grip on the crankshaft pulley and let it wedge against the engine

Yea, lefty Lucy, righty tighty. Buy wait! It can very easily break off if tightened TOO tighty. Been there, did that.

clockwise if you are looking at the front of the motor.
