I am thinking of getting one for my son. He had a PS2. I'm not sure which is best: PS3, Xbox 360 or Wii?
He's 8.
Any advice would be appreciated?

Well I've got all three consoles and IMHO they are all excellent. It all depends on what you want to get out of the console. If you say they had a PS2 the PS3 will play all his old games, it is the most powerful but is also the most expensive, it doesn't yet have many games and very few for 8yr olds, but it will play virtually all of the old PS2 games until new games are available. The graphics on this and the XBOX360 are incredible, BUT you will need a new largish LCD or PLASMA to get the very best out of the higher resolution. Oh, and it can be used to browse the internet, write e-mails etc. View pictures from your digital camera and store MP3's etc. Very much a one box solution for your entertainment needs in your living room.

The XBOX360 has been out a little longer than the PS3 so therefore has more games of more types and the High Def DVD player is really good as well, now that the software that runs it has been improved. The games look very similar to PS3 quality and are similar types, shooting, driving, sports etc. that are designed to appeal to their core segment of teen boys to late 20's - 30's males.

The Wii is cheaper as it doesn't have the movie player and bells and whistles of the other two consoles. It ouputs a lower quality picture (although still very acceptable) but also has an internet browser, like the PS3. The unique selling point of the Wii is the motion sensing controls for the majority of its games which Nintendo has introduced to appeal to a wider audience than the hard core gaming segment. And it's worked, it is currently the highest selling of the current crop of consoles. Nintendo also tend to focus their games on a wider audience by focusing on gameplay that isn't always gory, bloody or age content restricted.

So I'm not going to say choose A, B or C, as they are all good in their own way. YOU know what your son enjoyed with his PS2, each of the consoles can give many hours of enjoyment in their own right.

And I also hate the my console is better than your console fan boy attacks that you hear elsewhere. THEY ARE ONLY TOYS.

The PS3 plays full 1080p hi-definition wheras the Xbox just upscales the image. The internet gaming is free for the PS3 so over 5 years that's £200/$270 saved compared to Xbox live. If you like online play there's Warhawk and Unreal Tournament 3 is coming out. Also the Playstation Network has Little Big Planet and Home coming to it. Blu-ray discs mean that more can be stored on PS3 games allowing them to be bigger. An Xbox DVD holds about 8GB but a single layer Blu-ray disc holds 25GB and a dual layer holds 50GB yet a 360 game costs the same as a PS3 game. The PS3 is a very cheap Blu-ray player while you have to buy a £120/$200 add-on to play HD-DVD movies. The PS3 has been out a year less than the 360 and it's graphics are already equalling or bettering those on the 360. As the developers become better at developing games for the PS3 the gap will only widen. As far as games go most of the better games for the Xbox are either multi-platform or going to come out for the PC at some point like Gears of War and Halo 1 & 2 already have. The PS3 has Uncharted, Killzone 2, Haze, MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII, Ratchet and Clank, and God of War 3. Finally the PS3 has much better hardware than the Xbox which has massive 30% failure rate. The Xbox's strengths are that it's cheaper (but I don't think it is in the long run) and Xbox live is probably better (but you have to pay). If you are mainly a casual gamer or non-gamer and like having non-gamer friends round the Wii is the right choice for you. The Wii has some good games like Zelda Twilight Princess but a lot of others are just mini-game compilations. I think you're personal preference for the games on each system should be what you base your decision on but I'd go for a PS3.

if this is truley for your 8 year old son, you will want to buy him a wii. there are a lot more family oriented games made by nintendo. if you were to get him a 360 or ps3, they do have better graphics, but it is not somthing that an 8 year old would appreciate as much as an adult. many others can enjoy the ps3 because of the high graphics, and 360 just has a lot of games out, but most are at least for teens.

he is much better off with a nintendo wii.

PS3 is definitely the best but if he is 8 years old............I don't know. There are few rated E games for the PS3. Most are rated T and M. Perhaps he should keep the PS2 for a little while until he is 11 or 12 at least. That's my advice!

Wii is definatly the best and most fun. We had a ps2 and the Wii is loads better. It will also keep your son active as you have to stand up and play most games. He'll be fine with the sports game you get with it as you can play tennis and bowling and loads of others. It is best to get a game called Wii play as you get an extra controller with it and its cheaper than buying the controller on its own. Happy Playing

if he's only 8 i would recommend the wii. the wii is great fun to play and will keep him active for hours!

if he prefers to play normal console games then i would say the expensive ps3... can't go wrong with the ps3 in terms of technology etc. superior to the xbox anyway.

Wii - It's popular with both children AND adults! It has some of the top selling games, is the most hi-tech, and most fun! Get Guitar Hero 2 - This game is a hit only available through Wii.

8yrs old? get the Wii that'll keep him active the other 2 will cook his brains.

my gf's son is 15 he has a 360 and he's glued to it. at least with the Wii it'll keep his brain working for the right reasons and if he wants you to join in all the better and when he's bored with it you can play on it lol

enjoy
