Not too soon, I went the following week, November 9th and my gown didn't come in until mid-March and still needed alterations for my wedding in mid May. Go as soon as you can and order early - don't take chances.

No, it's actually perfect timing. You will want to order your dress at least 6 months in advance. So, order not too soon after Jan 1st. The order can take up to 2 months to get in. That will bring you to March or maybe April. Then, you'll be able to have your first fitting in April and then the second fitting in late May/early June. Most people schedule a finally fitting for anywhere between 1 month to 2 weeks before the wedding. Just to make sure everything fits well.

Going now is ideal, b/c you'll have time to look around and not be rushed.

I'm getting married October 2010 (it was supposed to be June 2010, but had to move it)... I've started working on the bodice of my wedding dress... Yeah, I'm making my own and aiming to keep the whole wedding attire under $100! :-D I think it would depend how picky you are when it comes to the wedding dress. You can actually start shopping right now. Look, look and look around. If you're lucky, you might find your dream gown on a very good discount you can't refuse. That's one advantage of looking around early enough, you can see what your choices are, and when you find the one you want, you can watch out for when that store would be having a big sale. You'll also be able to see what your other options are, aside from buying off rack, such as having it custom-made, ordering online, or buying a pre-loved dress. You have all the time to look for the "perfect" one. I probably started looking for designs since October last year, when he "informally proposed", and I have already found the design I adore, but will probably make a few changes on the details. But at least, my mind's already set on the general design of the dress.

Not to soon at all! Just dont buy something on an impulse. If you really like it, go home and think about it some more, it WILL be there the next day, week and even months. Expecially if your going to a big wedding shop, They will try to just get you to buy it that DAY, because they will give you a "special price" i did this! they swore that they could only honor the discount for that day, SO i bought the stupid dress and hated it! I now have a credit at that store becuase i hate that dress BUT i went to a smaller shop and order the dress of my dreams, its easy to get wrapped up in the moment but do not let them push you into a dress, itll be more of an issue in the long run. GOOD LUCK and CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

July is less then a year away you need to start doing some major planning. Book a place, get a dress for you and your bridesmaids, get a minister, pick your colors, order flowers. Check www.theknot.com for the wedding time line. Invitations can take 2 months to get in and must be sent two months in advance so get out your check list and start ordering and doing. Get as much done now so the closer the day gets the less stressful it is and you are not turned away anywhere because they are overbooked. Good Luck and if you need more help you can email me or go to my website at www.confettieventplan.com

It's not too early at all. The dress is one of the first things you should buy because it sets the tone for the rest of the wedding as you are the focal point. I looked at dresses before we were even officially engaged and as soon as he proposed I went and tried them on and picked one out. Go have fun planning and shopping. It's definitely not to early.

You also should consider going ahead and picking the venue for the wedding and reception and booking them as soon as possible. That's another task that needs to be done ASAP.

Have fun and congratulations!!! Your adventure is just beginning!

It's great to hit up a place like David's bridal or Alfred Angelo's. Both these places have a variety of styles and also carry veils, shoes and other accessories. You may or may not choose to buy your dress there (I got mine at Alfred Angelo's), but you'll be able to try a dress from every basic style and see what you like.

David's are among the least expensive gowns out there, and it makes a great baseline to compare other stuff to.

For this first excursion, let the salesperson choose some she thinks would flatter you. I was surprised that the dresses I ogled in magazines weren't the ones that looked the best on me!

It's never too early. I'm not even engaged and I go into bridal shops and look at dresses!!! Seriously, I've been planning my wedding for years.... lol!

Just make sure the dress will be appropriate for the type of wedding you'll have and that it'll look appropriate at the wedding site you're going to use.

Congratulations!

Of course you can start looking. There are so many options these days that it's a good idea to get an early start. Go with some idea of the style you are looking for and keep an open mind. Don't forget to tell the people in the store that you are just looking and ask them for suggestions.

Actually, you should start right now. Some gowns take 4-6 months to come into the store where you order them from. Then you'd need your gown to be altered. Also consider that you need your dress available to you so that you could match shoes, headpiece and veil to it. I suggest starting to shop now and make a decision by Jan/Feb. Don't BUY your gown right away, but it doesn't hurt to get the ball rolling. With some girls, it could take quite a few months to even pick out their gown.

Anyway, lots of luck in finding the gown of your dreams!
