My 8 year old went through this. It took him over a week to tell me. When he started walking funny i had to pry it out of him. My doc is a female as well. My son was so very embarrassed when we went. I just tried to reassure him that she would make it better. During the exam all she did was look, she did have to touch but she had gloves on and she did VERY LITTLE touching. I just looked the other way so he wouldnt be embarassed. It turned out he had a yeast infection down there, and it had made his gentials red, itchy and very swollen. She prescribed an antibiotic and gave him some cream to put on it 3x a day. I let him do this himself so there wouldnt be any more embarrassment for the poor kiddo. After a few days he was feeling better. I sure hope everything goes ok for you both. Good Luck

Maybe you could find a male doctor, like a urologist, in the area and get a referral for him to go there instead of to the female doctor. That might make him more comfortable. As for the whole thing about you having to be in the room, I have never heard of making parents of kids as old as your son stay in the room. My mom never went in with me after I was about 9 or so. I know that when my brother was about your son's age, he had a thing called testicular torsion, where one of the testicles gets sort of twisted in the sack, and it usually works itself out but if it doesn't, there's a chance that the circulation will get cut off to the point where that testicle doesn't function anymore, so it is important to go right away when that happens. Anyway, it was just my mom and my grandma living with us, and I remember my brother didn't tell us about it until the pain just got unbearable, and when he did, he insisted that nobody accompany him into the doctor's office. Just tell your son that you will respect his privacy, but he needs to go get it checked out.

Hernia ???

Just tell him there is something wrong there and the doctor will help the pain go away. He needs to get this done otherwise the situation will be worse. If you tell it to him like he is all grown up n responsible he ll go thru the exam just to live upto the image

Take him to the doctor. It doesnt matter if he gets embarassed. The doctor (male or female) is going to have to feel for herinia, and this is going to embarass him to no end. But hey, I guess its your choice, have him embarassed or dead. I know what id choose.
