I don't hear too much from the Deftones around here so it wasn't them, but back in my Pearl Jam days in high school, just hearing the opening 10 seconds of "Jeremy" made me want to throw things. I hated that because I absolutely loved the band, but radio had killed the song for me.

To this day I can't stand the song, and it's one of my least favorite by them. It came on the radio while I was out at lunch a little while ago and I immediately turned the station.

Did your favorite band have a single that got played to death? Can you listen to it now, or are you still sick of it?

lovnrckets - "Closer" was driven into the ground around here too. Ugh!

Rachel - that crazy Ben! And I agree that it was a departure from his usual stuff.

Dani G - LOL! Sublime still seems to be in heavy rotation around here too - you would think it was just released or something.

2007-10-10 08:13:27 · update #3

Spooky - agreed. When I listen to The Real Thing I usually skip over Epic - I'm just not ready yet.

2007-10-10 08:18:13 · update #4

LOL - that's true! Who wants to be known as the one who did "the abortion song"? That's a tough label to lose, and it's the only one a lot of casual listeners have...yikes!

2007-10-10 08:21:01 · update #5

Oh man...any single off of Nevermind is right up there too, Dani.

2007-10-10 08:23:39 · update #6

Prof - LOL! I heard "Bridge" the other day - the first time in years.

That's too bad about "Monkey Gone To Heaven", though.

2007-10-10 08:27:07 · update #7

Fool in the Rain - AGREED. Could not agree more.

2007-10-10 08:40:14 · update #8

jmike - yeah, it was 92 or 93, right as I was graduating high school. It makes me feel old too.

And I don't think stations will ever stop playing KISS. I think it's a law or something.

2007-10-10 08:44:22 · update #9

huevo - "Disarm" is definitely another one for me. That one gets the station turned immediately too!

I tend to go easier on bands I really like when it comes to overexposure. Still, I have to admit I've just about had my fill of NIN - Closer. Cool song yes, but ENOUGH already, lol. Anything from Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik would qualify too. That gets played here as if it were 1991 today.

Also, radio around these parts absolutely played Ten into the ground to the point I can't listen to it either.

Rachel is correct, Ben Folds is a lot more fun than that somber song. One of the best song titles of all time, Battle of Who Could Care Less.

A lot of the time it's older stuff that weren't necessarily my favorites that become annoying due to being the acclaimed songs that you hear when that band comes on the radio or whatever medium it may be. The perfect examples of it for me are Alison by Elvis Costello and Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkle. It's been a while since my opinion changed on these songs and my ability to enjoy them has not changed.
Somehow Monkey Gone to Heaven was corrupted for me as well, although I can't remember where it happened. It's not like you can't leave your house without hearing it, but I liked it and then I heard about it a lot and then I didn't.

Hi lovenrckts. I totally agree about Closer, that is a very good example. Great song, but man did they run it pretty far.

Kind of brings up a question (though not necessarily for that case, but it sparked in my mind for some reason) I may ask soon about records and when you think they went the wrong way picking the single for the record.

*****************
Yeah, it is a bummer. It's a good tune, but I just can't get into it anymore. I totally know what you guys are talking about with 10 and Nevermind. I had to take around a 10 year break from both of those records before I could really appreciate them again.

Since you are a Pearl Jam fan, I'll mention of their songs. I was in 1st, 2nd grade when they hit it big, so of course I really didn't know exactly HOW big they it it. I never watched MTV and I would listen to classic rock radio. When I did get into PJ in 11th grade (2001) I remember learning more and more about them and realizing my band in their quieter era were actually THAT huge. I always knew they were big, I knew who they were, I remember seeing Jeremy on some top 10 video of the 90's thing, but for some reason I didn't know they were #2 after Nirvana and they the whole grunge thing was that f-ing huge. No really, grunge was bigger then any other thing really has been since musically. Now everyone likes a differernt band, but then everyone liked only 5 bands or so.

Took a while to grasp, but I think now it just makes them more enduring that they survived with their integrity.

The only thing that sucks is when you mention PJ they only judge on the early stuff . At least I know they are still good.

Don't judge only on TEN, the new stuf is good, too.

Makes me feel good that I don't listen to music that is even remotely popular anymore. Hell, half of the CDs in my collection aren't even available in the US.

Anyway, going way back, I never want to hear "Rock And Roll All Nite" again (unless it's live, and I'm there). I still want to do severe physical damage to the radio station computers when I happen to catch "Sweet Child O' Mine."

... and yeah, Sookie... we had the Pearl Jam overkill radio thing going on here to back in (what was that, '92? '93? .... damn I'm old) the day. I spent that summer at the beach, and it was everywhere. By the time I packed up my stuff and got ready to move up to school, I had tossed my copy of Ten into the Gulf.

I'll agree with Prof on The Pixies but for me it was Where Is My Mind? Not necessarily as much as radio but from peers and friends, I still have problems listening to the song 15 years later. I's a shame too since it is such a good song. Although technically, I guess, it was not released as a single.

Another is Smashing Pumpkins "Disarm." Radio took that one and bashed it over and over.

As much as I love me some Zeppelin, I'd have to say "Stairway to Heaven" is quite overplayed. I have absolutely no qualms about the song, just that I don't feel it's even close to their best song. Also, Hotel California by The Eagles drives me nuts. I think it's the worst song ever by The Eagles.

Oh yeah. Soul to Squeeze, Suck my Kiss, and Under the Bridge by The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

that has happened on more than one occasion......I absolutely hate it.

Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Where Did You Go .......I don't know about the rest of the country, but it was HUGE here in Boston......it was on the alternative stations every 5 minutes

Sublime - What I Got .......way overplayed....even to this day,
its on the radio at least 4 times a day here from May to
September

Radiohead - Creep ........I used to like this song, but the stations around my area pretty much only play this song, Karma Police and Just

Dropkick Murphys in general......oh, and Aerosmith.......anything by these guys can be hard to stomach at times...........Boston's love affair with these bands is almost sickening........at least they haven't gotten to the Pixies

Every once in a while I can listen to these, just for the fact that I've stopped listening to the radio

***LnR - good call on Closer, forgot about that one

*EDIT* Can't forget about Nirvana..........I don't remember the last time I've listened to Smells Like Teen Spirit, All Apologies or In Bloom

I love Ben Folds and think everything he touches is golden, but "Brick" by the Ben Folds Five was way too overplayed. It's also not a good representation of his music as a whole (at all!) but that's what most people think of when they hear his name.

I still like the song, but it was definitively overexposed back in the day.

Sookie: I hate to bring him up all the time, but by now you should know with me it all somehow goes back to Ben Folds. :) I reference him quite a bit and I usually get the response, "Oh, the guy who sung that song about abortion?" Drives me crazy!

lovnrckets - One of my favorites of his, too!

Epic- Faith No More... I am STILL tired of it!

Closer - NiN.. I can listen to it now, but when it was a hit and for years after, I couldn't stand it. I was amazed, because it wasn't even the best song on that album. Never underestimate the general population's love of dirty songs.

The Beautiful People- Marilyn Manson, it was CONSTANTLY on MTV (back when they used to play music videos) I can listen to it now, but I don't think I will ever watch the video again. I got burned out.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen- while it was brilliant, I much prefer other Freddie Mercury song's Pre BORAP, like The March of the Black Queen, Nevermore, Liar, and My Fairy King, and other Queen song's like Son and Daughter and Doing All Right. I love bohemian rhapsody but I prefer Queen I and Queen II.
