Is it legal to eat Guinea Pigs? Are they Delicious?

guess not i personally would consider it animal cruelty they look like they just killed them with there hands while they were alive!!!! they look like theyre yelling =/ i wouldnt eat one.

I cannot tell you if it is legal to eat guinea pigs or not.
Pet lovers and animal lovers will get upset at you. However, two years ago, I was in Peru and found out that they LOVE to eat Guinea pigs. They call it Cuy.(Pronounced "Koo-ee").
They deep fry the cuys. They claim it's low on cholestrol and very nutritious. However, if they deep fried it, the oil absorbed by the meat would raise one's cholestrol, won't it?
I personally did not eat it because I cannot and will not eat a rodent. Unless there is a famine and I am very hungry, starving to point of death, then I just might consider it.
I cannot eat rabbits here in the USA either, like some folks do. My travelling companions who ate it said it tasted like chicken. It seems like all these strange foods taste like chicken, they say.

Fried Guinea Pig (Ayacucho-style)
1 guinea pig, de-haired, gutted, and cleaned
1/2 c. flour
1/4 - 1/2 t. ground cumin
salt and black pepper to taste
1/2 c. oil
Pat dry the skin of the guinea pig and rub in the cumin, salt, and pepper. Preheat oil. Dust the carcass with the flour and place it on its back in the oil, turning to cook both sides. Alternately, the guinea pig can be cut and fried in quarters.
Serve with boiled potato or boiled manioc root, and a salad of cut tomatoes and slivered onions bathed in lime juice and a bit of salt. Have cold beer on hand. Enjoy!

Well its not an endangered animal or anything, so im pretty sure its legal... But it IS disgusting. If not getting in trouble by the police or anything legal for doing it, if a friend or a family member knew you have it might be just as bad...

Not sure if its legal but I would think if you were going to take the risk and the time cleaning an animal you should go for something that might actually make a full meal.

I don't know maybe you should check with your local butcher and see if they know perhaps they will start carrying them for you so you don't have to go to all that work by yourself. They may have many healthy recipes and let you know almost everything that isn't chicken tastes like chicken or so I hear???

I don't think it's illegal as I've been eating them for years. I'm a regular at my local pet store. I usually purchase 2 a month and they are yummy.

No...they are not endagered or anything although it may be considered animal curelty. I don't think I would want to eat an animal who poo's and then eats it...but that's just me.....even if you wanted to (knowing that) they have no meat....

Yummy. I put mine on the grill with a little barbeque sauce.They cook really fast!
