AMEN SISTER!!!!
And I also suggest we call a truce on the stay-at-home mom vs. working mom nonsense.
Same for the daycare users vs. non-daycare users.

Given the number of people bringing the topic up, spanking seems to be a question that people like to discuss. And there is so much passion on both sides. I tend to agree that whether to spank your children is not a matter of principle but of convenience, but for some reason there are fervent advocates of spanking and equally fervent opponents. Interestingly, that debate seems to be limited to the U.S. - perhaps it's a bit like gun control or abortion, raising specific American sensitivities. As long as that is the case there is not much point in yelling "stop the debate!" It will go on till everybody (and that's a lot) is tired of it.

Sounds reasonable.
I agree with some spanking, and some not spanking. if the child is in impending danger, then spank them to teach them that their actions are too dangerous for a lecture. Children don't understand talk all the time. Depends on the child and their age.
I agree that sometimes spanking is a big problem, like if they spill their milk, don't spank them, give them a rag to wipe it up.
The thought that sparing the rod to save the child is ludicrous, and the reason we have so many criminals. No one is teaching this generation of young adults and teenagers that there are repercussions to their actions.
You are right, I agree... for both sides.... I'm sure you agree with me as well... that spanking is appropriate but not necessarily in all situations.

I think the time when people "agree to disagree" is when they are tired of fighting about it. If you find yourself in that category, just don't read the responses! First of all, there is almost never a subject everyone agrees on -- if there is, it's really boring and there's certainly nothing to talk or write about because everyone agrees. I don't think there's any harm in disagreeing -- as long as there's no violence or abuse or pain going on. I think those of us who are opposed to spanking see it as an important enough issue that we are not willing, generally, to just allow those who think spanking is acceptable to just go on doing it behind closed doors. We feel that the children are in difficult situations and if we can convince people to not spank them we feel like we've prevented the child from being in that difficult situation. Whether it should be against the law is an entirely different topic but, as long as it is perfectly legal to spank your child -- some of us feel it's at least potentially beneficial if some spankings can be prevented. I think the simple fact that even the idea of possibly making it against the law is even an issue should say something to you about how bad some people think spanking is. The discussion is not going to go away just because you no longer feel like you want to participate in it -- but, you certainly don't have to participate if you simply choose no to. It's not against the law to discuss any topic -- and the only reason to want the discussion to stop would be that you have nothing left to say or listen to. That's also perfectly legal the last time I checked.

Because it's interesting to discuss. If it wasn't, people wouldn't keep on bringing it up.
And, who knows, maybe one parent will read what you have to say on it, think that it makes sense & change the way they do things with their own child.
Without discussion, without thought, there would be no progress.
