Don't let the bedbugs bite. Fleas will hang around for a LONG time.

The fleas will live for quite some time - on YOU! And they'll breed and make more fleas who will live on you - the flea eggs can lay dormant for a long, long time, so you have to treat.
It won't be expensive, it's just a matter of finding a good spray to do the job, and you won't find these in a store or supermarket. No bug bombs! You need proper flea treatment. Pop in to a vets and purchase a can of flea spray - Indorex, Staykil, Acclaim or Skoosh. You may have to spray, vacuum the next day and then repeat the treatment in 1-2 weeks, after the rest of the eggs have hatched but then you should be fine. You just need one can, probably cost about $20-$30 for something decent.

I have 6 dogs and a cat, I am THOROUGHLY familiar on how to deal with fleas.
Your case will be much easier since you have no pets.
I know this post is long, but try to read the whole thing (or print it out!)
Fleas are kinda like mosquitos - the live on blood: dogs, cats, people, they don't care. If there are no animals around, then people are their only food source.
Go to Wal-Mart and get some anti-flea carpet powder and spray. (I get the Hartz brand, but they all work good)
--Fleas will NOT go away without using flea-spray. (I've seen them live for 3 or more weeks without ANY food source)
-strip your bed and spray down the matress thoroughly, also spray/powder the carpet.
-you will want to cover the entire bedroom, plus any rooms the animals were housed in.
--basically if you cover the carpets and furniture with the anti-flea spray, launder any clothes/linens that were in contact with fleas and wait the better part of a day, you will be ok.
Also, most of the flea sprays/carpet powders at wal-mart have a pleasant smell too, so you don't have to worry about your house smelling like a chemical factory. (They even have anti-flea febreeze!)
pretend like it's spring cleaning time and use the flea spray, and you will be clear of fleas in a day, maybe two.
-Spray matresses thoroughly
-remove couch/chair cushoins and spray both sides, and the exposed couch/chair.
-powder the carpet well, even under the bed and under the furniture and wait a couple of hours before vaccuming. (also, dispose of the vaccum bag when you are done)
**Also, once you are finished with a room, stay out of it for a while. the flea spray takes a little while to work, and during that time, the fleas will SWARM anything warm-blooded.
(Clean, spray, evacuate)
-Best thing to do is start at the end of the house, and work towards the front, when you have sprayed/powdered the place, leave and go to the store or a movie or something. (Don't forget the closets!)
-Put your linens in the wash (or take them to the laundry mat so you can do them all at one time.)
-Come back a few hours later and vaccum, then throw out the vaccuum bag.
I've done this a dozen times, and it works every time.
You're looking at about ten to twenty minutes of work in each infected room.
I've tried every brand name at wal-mart, and they all work the same.
If you miss a spot, the fleas will all huddle up there, like an island of safety and the come back with a vengance (they are vindictive little buggers! lol)
The flea poisons are highly effective, won't make you sick (unless you drink it!), smell good, and pretty cheap.
-anyways, it's not very hard to get a flea problem under control having 6 dogs - since you have no pets, this should only be a one time thing for you.
(if you had pets, a vital step would be to bathe the pet with flea shampoo and anti-flea their bedding area too, along with sevin-dust in the yard and doghouse)
*Make sure the b/f get to do most of the work, so he'll be extra motivated to have a chat with his folks! lol :)

Pesticides used in bombs and by services are toxic and don't really work. Here's what I have successfully done in a non-pet house:
Get a dog that has been treated with Frontline or Advantage. Take it into the house and walk it all around, roll it over the bed, couch, wherever you have fleas. I did this only once and it worked, but you might want to repeat once a week for a few weeks to be sure. Changing the bedding and vacuuming will help as well. Also, hardware stores sell non-toxic flea traps or you can make your own with dish soap and a light bulb. You can google this topic and learn a lot, but here are two sites that might help:
one about natural flea control:

and one about how toxic pesticides are:

I second (or third) the Advantage or Frontline comment. When the animals shed they'll be leaving that stuff all over the house and it usually kills the fleas in just a few days. I have 6 cats and have NEVER bombed anywhere I lived, only made sure to put Advantage on all of the pets and it has gotten rid of the flea invasion.

as long as they are still biting you then they will stay.......At night turn off all of the lights and heat sources and keep the house as cool as possible, then get a pie plate and cover the bottom with water and add a drop of dish-washing liquid to the water. Put the plate in the floor beside a lamp. As the fleas jump towards the lamp for heat, they will land in the pie plate and the little bit of dish-washing liquid will make their back legs stick together so they cant jump out and they will drown:) This may take a few nights to get rid of all of them, but should be much better in one night. Can also use a night light instead of a lamp if the house is really cold and completely dark.

Well, even without animals, fleas can stick around and live off biting you. If you can, try a bug fogger then clean and wash everything. Also try washing and then drying clothes for longer than normal. High heat kills fleas. The worst part of a flea problem is eggs, so get a carpet powder that can kill all stages of flea.

ooooohhh... they must be dirrrrrrrtyyyyyyyyy! :(
First get the flea bomb stuff at walmart. Go ahead and over-do it. Put food in the cupboards, and cover or just remove anything babies (if you have them) might chew on (ie: everything, lol) Then make sure you vacuum every single nook and cranny. Remember to take the hose off the vacuum and get the edges of the rooms and all the corners. Wash everything. All bedding, even clean things. Stuffed animals, anything washable that's been on the floor. This is the only way to really get rid of them. Or you can just take a 3 month vacation and when you come back, since there was nothing for the little bastards to eat, they will all be DEAD..... BWA HA HA HAAAAA.....

I think they can live just fine without animals to feed on if they have you. If you have no pets then bomb the place while you are at work. You may want to do it again in 7-10 days afterwards to kill any that had not hatched. I've also heard this works but don't know if it does. Put a few mothballs in your vacuum bag and then sprinkle salt on your carpet. Vacuum everyday or every other day and reapply the salt. In about a week they say the fleas will be gone. Like I said I don't know if it works or not but you could try.
