I didn't have nothing else going for me. I couldn't afford college and not much of a job market for only a high school diploma.
It was an easy choice to make. I got money for school, place to live, able to travel and a paycheck. It was also good to help my self esteem and knowing I did my part to ensure the freedom of America.

I joined because I was in a dead end job, and a desire to do something more. That was why I joined the Air Force. After I got out, I missed the military so much that I joined the Army National Guard, it kind of fills the void I feel, but I deploy to Iraq soon, and if things go well, I would like to go active duty again.

I joined because it was something I've wanted to do since I was a kid. Everyone has different reasons for joining. I have known two university professors join, one of which was making over $100k teaching at Ohio, and a lot of people that were born into money to give it all up to join the military.

I joined out of high school because it sounded fun and I had nothing else to do. I stayed because it was kinda fun, and I had nothing else to do. The Iraq war took a lot of the fun out of it, but now I am over halfway to a pretty decent retirement, so why quit now? Plus I feel like I have done many things in my 11 years in the Army that I can be proud of.

I joined to pay for college. While I did not stay on active duty, I enjoyed my time of service and entered the reserves soon after my discharge.

I turned down 3 football scholarships because I had played 4 years in H.S. and one in semi-pro and didn't want to play any more.

So, I volunteered and during Basic at Parris Island the Base football Coach, Colonel Pickett put together a team and we whooped Army butt and any Marine base team that challenged us. Undefeated!

OOOOORah!!!

I received a college education which cost me a five year obligation. Since then, I've spent another 21 years trying to pay back the United States and its citizens for everything they have given me and my family. Proud to serve!

I wanted to get in the mud, fire guns and do all those fun things soldiers do. Benefits and pay as nice as well, as are the odds of meeting great people to socialize with.

But all your traditional reasons - travel, university money, serving your country - nope, I think there are better ways to do all of them.
