I would never own one because I don't like the way they look... BUT I've known several people who've owned them for MANY years. These cars really last. So, functionally... overall... I think Volvos are good cars. The mechanic MUST know what he's doing though. All of the expensive fixes came when the person fixing the car replaced parts that didn't really have to be replaced. They should've just sent the person to another mechanic if they didn't know what they were doing. With just a few fixes, even with expensive ones, a car that lasts that long is worth it.

I have three vehicles all 2004. M5, S60, and a C5500. The Volvo needs repair no more than any of the others and is usually fairly simple. I do all my own work but I ave owned 5 new Volvos over the last 12 years. I still have two and no issues on either. The newer, MY98+, had some early ETC issues. Most of those are fixed now and the older ones are under a recall. As for cost Volvo here charges 95 an hour, BMW is 120 and the heavy truck places is around 90. So not too bad there. Safety Volvo is just avenge now. As for fuel mileage it really depends. Yes the AWD Turbos get about 25 highway, about the same as a small SUV. But they are also 300hp cars. My BMW gets ~20 highway. On the other hand if you pick up a natural aspiration S40 or a diesel, you are looking at 30+ or 40+ respectively. The great thing about buying a used Volvo is they do not hold their value at all. You can get a S60R which stickered at 41k two years ago for ~25k now. For 25k a Volvo is a hell of a car. At 41k though you are better off with a 335 or 545

I am a tried and true Volvo owner. They are the only cars I will buy. I just bought a new Volvo XC90 4wheeldrive Turbo Luxury Edition SUV. I love it. I don't need the 4 wheel drive, I don't even know how to use it, but it came with the car.
They are the only car I have driven for 22 years. They are expensive, but they last forever. They come with great warrantees and as long as you keep them up they run like a top. I recently moved to OK from VA and gave my best friend a 1996 Volvo 960 and it was in tip top shape. It was beautiful and runs like a top.
I don't even look at other cars, but I do like the toyota prius. BUT...a few seconds ago I found out Volvo has a flex fuel vehicle I could get for a run around town car. I am interested in helping out the environment. My new SUV is a super highway car and I adore it!!
VOLVOs forever!!!
VIVA LA VOLVO!!!

There are a lot of good answers here, but the one issue not touched upon is your location.
See, you need to factor in your location before you can determine the maintenence costs. For example, if the Service Center is a two hour trip, a simple tune-up becomes a two day experience. Talk to other Volvo owners you see at the grocery store, shopping mall or some such place; you might find a great independent mechanic that does great work cheap, that is what I did and found a great guy to do the stuff I can't do.
I have two Volvos now, one with 200,000 miles, and am a big fan of older volvos.
Good luck.

Having had eleven Volvos in the past thirty-nine years, I can tell you that they used to be durable, easy-to-maintain vehicles. They routinely lasted for several hundred thousand miles without any major component failure. Sadly this is no longer the case. Volvos have gotten very complicated since the late 90s and this of course adds significantly to the repair costs. They are no longer as reliable as they once were but are still quite safe. Dealer service and support is spotty.
In my opinion, the last decent Volvo was the 940 series which was done away with in the mid-90s. I still have one Volvo, a 1966, which will probably outlive me.

I just bought myself a 2007 S40 and it is the best Volvo I have owned. This is my fourth Volvo and it feels just as solid as they old style "boxy" ones. I buy Volvo because it a safe and reliable car and because it is something different. The only downside to owning a Volvo is the maintenance cost. It costs just as much to repair these cars as it does a BMW or Mercedes. Which actually makes sense because most of the cars that Volvo sells now a days cost just as much as BMW or Mercedes.

They've been known to be really reliable and safe cars. They are almost right up at BMW, Audi's alley in-terms of luxury, but cost a lot less(when buying used) So for the right price you're getting a luxury european car for the price of a higher end Japanese car. Plus they're probably the most reliable European car you can get. I'm a proud owner of a 2004 S60R, I really like how they look, but I know they have really controversial styling to most people. But I really belief they make beautiful, safe, yet reliable cars. The new C70 coupe and C30 hatchback are especially attractive.

they have solid engines and the bodies are strong. as to are they worth the money? depending on your income level yes.
are they expensive to fix? some of the parts are in my opinion way over priced but, labor operation times are reasonable job for job and most service points are accessable.
however i must lament the passing of the rear wheel drive cars, as they had less gimmicks and had free wheeling engines[would not bend valves if timing belt broke]

Best car I have ever had. Repair cost was right in line with other cars, very dependable, and a good safe car. By the way, I love the boxy look of the older ones
