Why split it?
Get a studio room bed that folds away into a cupboard. That way you're left with one big room that turns into a bedroom when you need it.

Depending on the way you are setting up your room, and how much privacy you require, you could use bookcases as a divider. They add storage and decrative space also. Plants on the top would add height if you need it and some color. I imagine in that space your bed would have to be on one wall, but you could put your dresser opposite the foot of your bed or against the bookcases. If privacy isn't an issue and you just want to create the two areas, you could use shorter bookcases and it would keep the space open visually by being able to see across them part way up, and both "rooms" would feel bigger. Goodluck! :)

Get some tall cabinets (about 6 foot). but those perpindicular to the window wall. Don't go all the way to the wall opposite the windows, though. Then, use curtains to seperate the rest of the way. That way, the curtains can be moved to go to the bathroom and out of the room. Here is a ''diagram'' Window wall |==== | The equal signs are cabinets, these | the walls. Then, the curtains Bad explanation, I know =/

how about a victorian style partition they are in three sections which are free standing and just offer a small amount of privacy to make two rooms. you can buy some really pretty ones and they are usually found in antique shops. either that or buy three large pieces of MDF wood, cut a stylish shape into each section at the top, paint or cover with pretty material to suit decor and hinge screw them together so they open out to cover the area to give privacy or can be pushed back to expose the other room.

Get a room divider that can be extend if need and they come in a variety of colors and/or invest in some nice area rugs. If you wanna go cheap but effective with it, buy a ceiling slider, attach a curtain/fabric long enough to touch the floor, and you can slide it to divide and slide it to open the area.

Hang "bubble gauze" across the room available through http://www.dharmatrading.com/

What about folding screen as a divider.

Hanging plants and plants on stands would define the separate spaces.

place the sofa at a right angle to a wall, and put a screen/trellis.curtain etc. across the back.
Decorate front to go with Living area [ small artwork, greenery, cover with fabric;
and back to go with bedroom area [ flower garlands, small photos hung up with 'tack' glue, hooks with small purses or necklaces hung on them. ]

Wear an eye patch. When you are on the right hand side of the room put the patch on the left eye, and vv for the left side of the room.

dead easy, polystyrene bricks/blocks stick them with PVA glue( build them like you would a brick wall) dead easy to cut & you can paint or decorate them with material,,,just make sure you dont bump into them as they will be a little brittle, & they are good sound proofing they will give the effect of a normal brick wall.
