Check it out by volunteering. The SCA (Student Conservation Corps) has projects all over the country (summer stints), and Habitat for Humanity is worldwide. Find out what you enjoy doing. Peace Corps and VISTA are other opportunities to consider. If we weren't in war, I'd also suggest the military.

Working in a park system, national park, state park, local park.
Starter jobs would be assisting at a children's camp, camp counselor, recreation assistant, sports coach; summer concessions or maintenance at a camp or park.
Volunteer starter jobs could involve the Girl Scouts or YWCA.
