I am thinking about opening a business that caters to brides on their wedding day. This would go beyond the basic planner. In this role, I would be a bride's maid for the day, right down to a uniform. I would help her dress, do her makeup and nails, and keep pesky relatives away.

During the reception, I would fetch drinks and appetizers, help her in the bathroom and rub her feet if they get tired. Does this sound like a service people would be interested in? Are there other things I should include to make this more appealing?

Um, hello... that's why the bride's attendants are called "brides-MAIDS." Nobody's going to pay you to do what their friends are doing for free. I got my hair, nails and makeup done professionally by people TRAINED to do them, my mom and sister helped me put my dress on (I don't want a complete stranger dressing me), the staff at the reception hall brought me drinks and food (as they do in most reception venues), my bridesmaids helped me pee (who wants a STRANGER helping them use the bathroom???), and hubby gave me a foot rub in the limo. I think it would be really, really annoying to have some stranger constantly around me on my wedding day.

Seems like a good idea to me. I'm not sure about the hair/makeup part - most brides get theirs done somewhere and that part is a special time for the bride and her family & friends. I think you would have better luck focusing on less personal things. Maybe these are things a wedding planner already does (I don't have one), I'm not sure.

Some other things that you might do are:
- Liaison with photographers & DJ's. I've been to many weddings where the bride was yelling at one or both.
- Organize who is helping on the day of the wedding. My friend handed out 3x5 cards to everyone (mom, brother, bridesmaids, etc.), with their responsibilities (bring cake cutter, help with balloons outside). I thought it was genius.
- Be in charge of children or organize babysitter for ceremony or reception. I don't mean that you watch all the kids. For example, when I get married next May, I'll have two children of my own. I am going to hire someone to be in the wings, able to take my children (ages 3 and infant) aside, should they fuss during the ceremony. Afterwards, I'm hiring babysitters for them and other kids coming.

Like another poster, I thought you meant a maid to clean the house. :-) Then I thought you meant you would be a bridesmaid for hire.

I don't think most brides would want this service. They'll have their nails done the day before, and many will have their make up done by a professional who specializes in makeup. Other than that, between her family, friends, and bridesmaids, she can probably handle the rest. And she won't have much time for a foot rub during the wedding.

the first tasks (getting dressed, makeup, nails, helping to go to bathroom) are usually performed by maid of honors, bridesmaids, and professional stylists.

The other tasks (aside from the feet rubbing) are usually done by the catering staff. many times they assign one person for the bride and groom.

If the brides aren't interested, I'm sure the grooms would be. They would appreciate the help getting showered and dressed. The service during the reception (especially in the bathroom), and the special massages.

Sounds like a goldmine. How do I invest?

sounds interesting, but i think it would be difficult to cultivate business....usually brides want to be with their friends and family when they are getting ready. I thought when I saw this posting that it would be an actual maid to clean their house.....which i think is a GREAT idea- how cool would it be to come home after the honeymoon to a sparkling clean house?? Now that's something I'd hire.

These are things I personally would not be comfortable with a stranger doing. It's nice in theory, but I'd rather rely on my close friends for that.
