I live in Alabama. I want something that is not dangerous to children or animals. Something that wont be hard to trim and will look good around the house.

If you live in the North-East , mountain laurel "kalmia latafolia" is a good choice . It's evergreen , has a nice shape , the sticky pink flowers can't be beaten for beauty .

Carolina Jasmine....it looks a lot like Honeysuckle...but stays green all year. Flowers smell nice...but unlike the Honeysuckle...the nectar in these are poison.

How about Sweet Box(Sarcococca) or Osmanthus(Oleaceae)? Both are evergreen and easy to keep. Their scents are heavenly!
