Yes, people go to war over their stupid religion and beliefs. Why can't we all get along?!

Wars typically happen when one group of people want to take something away from another group. It can be something they feel they are entitled to (and if it's not, they can usually muster some sort of argument as to why it is) or it can be blatant opportunism.

Whatever the case, there is usually a justifcation sought. Religious beliefs can be used as very effective justification becuase the people who are asked (or compelled) to fight the war tend to be very pasionate about these beliefs, and tapping passion is a poweful way to motivate people.

Nationalism is another powerful tool to compel people to fight (but then, that's really just another religion now isn't it?).

Very few wars have actually been caused by religion, but a large number have used it as an excuse. The Crusades used religion as an excuse, but were started as the Pope realized that there was a large, unoccupied amount of armored knights hanging around in France and the rest of Europe.

Johnny there makes some very good points..

true, how true..

For the few who are behind most wars, religion can be a very powerful motivating tool, and an effective cover.. to them, the ends justify the means, and they have no qualms about smearing the name of their own faith (or the faith of others) for the sake of achieving their goals..

No, but disagreement about religion can cause war. Religion is an abstract object. It, by itself, cannot cause anything to happen.

Religion is like a gun. By itself, it is harmless. However, in the hands of an idiot, it will do damage.

War is human nature.

Look at any male on a Saturday night. The only delusion is not believing our nature, morals new, war old.

Religion is one of the many excuses humans give for violently seeking power, revenge, and worldly goods that they have not earned.

If we did not have religion, people would find other excuses for attacking their neighbor.
