I'd say go the expedited route. There were stories all over the news a few weeks ago about the backlog of getting passports. Spend the extra money to be sure you can take the trip! We got passports last year and I think it took 6 to 8 weeks.

What country are you in? If you are in the US, good luck because the passport agency was so backed up from last summer when they required passports for any international travel. You may need to expedite it!

The Passport Services are overloaded with passport applications.
From 6am to midnight you can call the NPIC ( National Passport Information Center ) to check or ask a question. Please expect long waiting times.
