"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.
For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

You are violating the first rule of proper biblical scholarship:
Who is speaking, and who is being spoken to?
God is speaking to Israel. It is through the medium of a covenant / contract between the two parties, God and Israel, and none other.
How is it then that you believe you are required to meet the conditions of a covenant you were never a party to?
People today, including Christians, are free to work every day. If some desire to esteem the sabbath, they are free to do so. If some desire to esteem every day alike, they are free to do that also.
Careful you don't find yourself at odds with the Holy Spirit. He is the guide in a Christian's life, and not the law.

People work on Sunday and it's OK. Sunday never was the Sabbath. Since the first week of Creation, God made the Sabbath for Man and Woman to commune with Him in the Garden of Eden. That was on the 7th day of the week...what we call Saturday in English these days. If you know a Latin base language, you might realize the word Saturday and Sabbath are both called sabado or something similar...that's exactly why. The Roman Catholic Church changed God's Law over 300 years after the apostolic age. The New Covenant with Christ has nothing to do with the Ten Commandments. It has to do with the sacrificial system that God's chosen people had been under with the old covenant. That is why you no longer see Hebrew people sacrificing in the Temple in Jerusalem...Jesus is our One High Priest before God in heaven.
The Sabbath has not been done away with. Some work is mandatory for saving life. Work for monetary gain is not.

It means that the Lord of the Sabbath set a day where here would be no work.
The Lord of the Sabbath is Jesus. And so Jesus told them that, and those who were 'religious' rejected his word. The ceremony or observance was still a part of tradition - they did not place God above the tradition or the order - even though it came from Him.
That was their mistake. They didn't recognize the one who told them to keep it. And they did not recognize God's Son who gave it to them.
Matthew 12
5 Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
Mark 2:28
So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."
Luke 6:5
Then Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

A couple of problems. First Sunday is not the Sabbath. Further, we are no longer under the law. However, as a principle, we should have a day of rest in which we commit to bond as a family. It is simply logical. That said there is freedom and not bondage to the law in Christ.
As Jesus said the Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath.

It means what it says. Since we are to follow the ways of Jesus and He healed on the Sabbath, then certain exceptions can be made for people who save lives. Selling and bartering should not be done and most stores close on Sundays or whatever Sabbath day the owner observes. Greed and money should not be the determining factor in whether or not a business is open.

Generally, as the Lord requires us, we shouldn't work on Sundays but there are circumstances that we have to. A policeman, firefighter or EMS worker might have to for obvious reasons. A service man or woman as well. But we should keep the spirit of the Sabbath in our hearts although we may have to work on those days.

Israel was according to the Bible "a hard hearted and stiff necked people". They needed reminders of what God had done for mankind. They also needed to know God was their true ruler.
Not only was there no work to be done but neither was there to be travel more than a mile from where they were on Saturday evening as their days began at nightfall. So Saturday dusk was the start of Sunday morning.

Jesus is the new covenant. How come you cannot just read your bible. It is written many times. When we have Christ we are not bound by the laws of old. The 10 commandments are for the bad people, so they can have rules to follow to help then behave better. The sabbath was created for man, not the man for sabbath.

Ironie,
The Sabbath day was actually Saturday. It began on Friday evening and lasted thru Saturday evening. It was to be observed throughout the Old Testament times by GOD'S People (The Israelites). The Old Testament was fulfilled in CHRIST and a New Testament became our LAW. Have a wonderful week.
Thanks,

My mom said there used to be a law stopping people from working on Sundays. But in the lives of most middle class families the income is needed.
