I agree. I feel Christians, opposed to alternative beliefs, have used the evil image of the bad witch and used it to smear all Wiccans.

Modern witches are sometimes misunderstood because they adopted a very negative word for themselves. (i.e. witch) The term is not historically neutral. It means really bad things about the person.
And while the Bible did not originally mention witches (that was added by King James) I have NEVER seen any source that says it should be "thou shalt not allow a liar to live." Every translation of the Torah I've seen says "sorceress", and my own Bible also says sorceress. More misunderstandings don't help in correcting previous misunderstandings.

I'm a Witch myself, and I live in the Bible Belt. Not very many people know that I am a Witch, and the misunderstandings are why I'm in the so-called "broom closet."
People are going to believe what they want to, regardless if the truth is right under their noses. A Christian is not going to read a book/site/article on Wicca or Witchcraft and know after reading it that it is not devil worship, even though we will tell them that we don't even believe in their devil! They'll say it's the devil in disguise or some other crap. Their Bible calls us "of the devil" and so will they. They're simply too intolerant, close-minded, and ignorant to realize that there are people different than them.
This is what I've said before to the few people who have called me a devil worshipper: "How can I worship your devil when I don't even believe he exists?" and "I don't need an entity of supreme evil to scare me into doing the right thing like you Christians do." That *always* shuts 'em up. Always.

I can completely relate to what you're saying. I get the same reaction from people all the time.
The fact is that Wicca, Satanism, paganism and anything that's gotta to with the occult, or unknown (to most people) is so easily categorized as something dark and evil. It is amazing that this day in age, when every type of information is at your fingertips, so many people still remain so in the dark about these things.
A shame really. I don't think that will change any time soon though... I'm surprised that a lot of wicca practitioners are even open about what their beliefs are now, you have to remember, once upon a time, your beliefs could get you burned at the stake! So I guess that is an improvement!

I've read the Tanakh and it said 'Though Shalt not Suffer a "Sorceress" to Live' It didn't say Liar.
And thank to the Bible, Maleus Maleficarum and the Spread of the Christian religion Witches have been portrayed as evil and satanic in most countries.
As for Wicca, only some people from the Abrahamic religions believe Wicca is evil, and on the exception of some Pagans everyone else just thinks Wicca is stupid.

I've been a witch for many years, and I've also studied Judaism/Hebrew. The original hebrew uses the word "sorcerer".. it isn't liar, poisoner or anything else.
It's that simple, and it shouldn't surprise anyone who can see that the Abrahamic god is a sociopathic megalomaniac.
He orders the genocide of many indigenous peoples even in the oldest of texts, including babies, cattle and trees. Witches/Sorcerers are just on his long list of hates.
People have believed for many years that witches were in league with the devil because of the Maleus Maleficarum (The Witches Hammer). Wiccans (a relatively new religious belief), because they took on the name of "witch", became associated in the 20th century with devil worship.

You've answered your own question within the question.
The Pagan community doesn't even understand Witches. The continually reinforced belief that Wiccan and Witch are interchangeable terms is proof of that. If the people that should know can't even keep it straight, how can we honestly expect others to sift through the thousands (if not millions - haven't checked lately) of hits a google search brings up and figure out which ones are "good" sites and which ones aren't worth the bandwidth it takes to keep them on-line?

As a child, I was raised to follow the christian faith. Since that time I've gone my own path to choose my personal religious preferences. There was a certain idea, or image that was portrayed of witches, which was evil, and condemned to hell. Growing up, i knew nothing otherwise, so i also had this idea in my head until i decided to seek out further information and to no longer follow the christianity. However, for those who are born into the christian faith, and ignorant to any other type of religion, this may be all they know about wiccans and witches. Unfortunately, it's only until if / when they decide to gain more knowledge on this topic in order for the stereotype of 'witch' will be banished.

Because the whole idea of witchcraft is supernatural . They really try to convince themselves that they have the power to put spells on people. That's simple Power of Suggestion . Nothing magic , nothing mysterious , can be done by anybody who cares to , so long as the victim believes it's possible .
What was your purpose in joining a witch group ? If it's to have the power to cast spells , you're hoplessly superstitious .
