It was trial and error. You got more errors: google "interlingua" or esperanto" or "artificial languages" or "constructed languages". Interlingua and Esperanto failed to be international languages because they're biased: using certain languages over others: Esperanto uses bits and pieces only from European languages. That discouraged Africans and Asians to learn it. Since it's like what you speak in Europe [only with weirder grammars], why not just speak those European languages individually that they always did. And that's what they did. There's the failed experiment of a Polish eye doctor called Mr. Zamenhof.
MAT2t, don't forget there's also sign language or braille. Each country has their own form of sign language and braille. Meaning it's different in each natural language [English or Chinese, for example].

their is a commonly accepted notion that at the UN summits the common language is English followed by French, probably something to do with the fact we used to own half the world at one point and brought english to the masses but as a "coomon" language amongst all people, i must say no, language is a sign of what you are and a sign of your cultures and in some cases beiefs, changing that will not provide anything useful i think.

Isn't that what Esperanto was all about?
I think a common language would probably facilitate understanding, but getting people to learn another in addition to their native tongue is probably not going to happen.
I'd hate to lose all the languages because each is a unique way of interpreting the world around us.

English is the most used language in the world. If we went to for example Spain and talked to 10 ppl there is a chance that one out of the 10 will speak English. but if everyone spoke the same language when we traveled to "foreign" countries you wouldn't be graced with the beauty of there language.
