I try not to read people's minds. Unless somebody says, "you were bad", I won't think people think I'm bad.

Moon . It doesn't turn you into a bad person.
There's a French saying :

Tout comprendre, ce'st tout pardonne
( understanding everything means forgiving everything.
I don't believe in that, I'll take the first bit to heart I do want to understand other people and why bad things happen.
I even want to understand what makes bad things happen.
and I will gladly imagining walking a mile in someone else's
shoes to find out. It makes you grow as a person.
But if also means you sometimes 'see' things and have to give honest answers to people they may not want to hear.

It's man's nature to find comfort in being 'aligned' in thinking with others. This affirms that what they believe is in fact the right thing. Saying "I understand" doesn't give that absolute support to one's thought. It's just like saying "OK, you got your point there",..but it never nods to his correctness of the matter. It's just a '60 over 40 percent' leaning to his side. It doesn't make a bad person out of you, but it somehow clouds that 'reliable comrade' stuff between you and the person who needs your 'approval' so badly.

Just my thought: I think the word "understand" has come to be interpreted in many situations as sympathy or empathy. If you say "I understand why the terrorists struck the World Trade Center," some people infer that you sympathize with them, rather than simply knowing the facts that led up to the incident.

Again, that's just my opinion.

It doesn't! NO! Empathy is one thing; approval is another...
I understand a lot of things that I think need to be stopped! Understanding WHY something happens is the first step in correcting it! }:>

Hi, Moon. (You could never be a bad person! That's just silly!)

I understand many things that I do not agree with, as I am sure you do. I have never known you to show any sign of being anything but kind and loving. I have come to look forward to your morning greeting like my cup of coffee. They both perk me up and give me a good start!

I wasn't aware that it did.

However, lacking compassion about the event or giving in to victim blame may make someone "bad." Or just a jerk. :-D
