I just had 3 ladys come to my door and said hello we are just going around and wanted to read to you from the bible in Deuteronomy, which is almost like a Godsend to me (Deuteronomy is the easiest book to quote evil verses...) anyway, they asked if I read from the Bible and I said why yes I certainly do, I know Deuteronomy chapter 13 verses 6-10...And she said oh I am not too familiar with that so she turned to it and began to read it to me...Then she said oh yeah that is very important to keep your family from worshipping other Gods...I replied really? I actually didn't like it because it says to kill them, and turned my back to them and walked inside. True story happened just now and I came inside to write this to ask what you would do?

I STAND AND APPLAUD YOU!!!!!!
I usually do this to certain ones that come to my door.

JW - I'm catholic. - They usually walk really fast if not run.
Christians - I'm Jewish. They smile and walk away
Holy rollers/ Bible Thumpers ect - I'm Pagan and there is no Hell! (if you can get a word in edgwise) and shut the door.
Has worked in the past - since none seem to come around anymore. <>>>
I love how you handled it too. I wish I could remember a few bible verses now and then to keep those "Have you found God?" people back. The only thing I have been able to come up with is "You lost him again? How do think you are going to convert the populus if you can't keep track of your own deity?"
Then I smile and walk away. It usually stuns them at first and gives me time to sneak away. LOL

Oh, and to those that think we are mean by being blantantly errogant in throwing it back to them well, in our neighborhood, I used to be nice and because of it they were making monthly trips to our house. I live in the Bible Belt and we have had every church within a 5 mile radius knock on our door. Calling their church to request them to not come by anymore didn't work so I had to turn to the extreme. Needless to say I only see maybe one religious rep about 1 time a year. Worked well.

The Law of the Old Testament was intended for the new nation of Israel has they entered Canaan. They were surrounded by people groups that did not worship God so it says in Deuteronomy 4:38 and 7:1 that He drove out most of the pagans. But if anyone was to be found living in sin, the Israelite community must purify itself by executing any unrighteousness.

For the case of "Bible thumpers", those ladies probably meant well but it is trivial of them to read from Deuteronomy when there are better passages to explain God's forgiveness and Christ Jesus' sacrifice for all sinners, me and you included.

What should you do when an Atheist thumps their Bible, like you did?

You did not understand what you read whatsoever. You are not only arrogant, you are rude and ignorant. You might be able to quote a verse, but so what? You failed to get the total picture of what the Bible teaches (perhaps the same can be said for the 3 ladys).

I agree with you that when anybody comes to your door in that manor, it can be an annoyance. I am a Christian, and I really don't appreciate it either, but it never hurts anybody to be polite and just acknowledge them. Understand the position that they are in, having to expect people to be rude to them at every house.

However, you are criticizing these women for being thumpers, and even though I totally agree with you that people should never thump a Bible, you did the same thing, so you are no different than they are.

Thanks for being a Godsend and showing people how ignorance works

God Bless

I think like in everything else it depends on the individual. If you simply don't want to hear what they have to say then politely tell them you're not interested and wish them a nice day. I personally always open the door and listen to them whether I agree or not. All they want is to get their word out and I see nothing wrong with that. There have been times when they've asked to continue to come to my house regularly and I politely tell them no thank you. So the next time someone knocks on your door peak out the window and after identifying them, which is pretty easy, decide whether you want to open or not.

I would absolutely talk to them.

As you said, Deuteronomy is easy pickin's.
Maybe, if they were friendly (as most of them are) even invite them in for coffee further discussion.

I believe a well-read atheist could have a great theological debate with your average door-to-door Christian.

Perhaps you could open their eyes to some things they didn't realize were in the "Good Book" they were carrying.

lol - i let my son answer the door. he's almost 6 ft tall with long dyed black hair, bloody heavy metal t-shirts and a pentacle around his neck. they tend to hand him things and leave.

funny thing is, my son volunteers for many different organizations, holds doors open for people when out and about, works a part time job while getting straight A's at school etc etc. they have no idea what a great person he is, but they think he's evil because of how he looks (they would be even more scared if they knew we were pagan lol)

It all depends on the mood I am in. I am impressed with what you did. I am very much like that. I usually speak my mind and if other people don't like it, then they don't have to be around me. I usually don't answer the door if I know they are there. Otherwise, I will tell them I am a christian of my own right and I don't have to share my beliefs with anyone unless I want to.

I'm more like Raven (or like she used to be), I'll invite them in, give them coffee or a smoothie, and talk to them. I'm not interested in being converted or in converting them, and I'll make that clear. If I don't have time to talk to them, I won't answer the door at all.

I'm not rude unless they really provoke me, but usually they have good intentions. We just believe differently. They don't stop by my house that often, and when they do they rarely come inside because they're afraid of my dog.

Well, I don't really have a standard response.

I used to invite them in, because there are things that I've wondered about (ex. what various churches taught about Arius, etc.) .

I *always* told them, from the get-go, that I was very happy to discuss religion, but if they were going to try to convert me, then they should not come in.

And they always came in.

And they always tried to convert me.

So, what I've done is to call the Kingdom Hall or Church and tell them to put me on their "Do not visit" list.

I put my Billy Bob Teeth in my mouth and open the door and tell them that I'm not buying the brand of religion that they are selling.they just stair at the teeth and then they do the run-walk away from my house.
