The major pitfall is that we wouldn't get to be our own moral authority? We would have to be accountable to a higher authority than just us?

I assume you mean the chanting style and not the life style of spiritual life. The chanting spiritual path means nothing in the end. The most despicable person is probably kind to small dogs or something.

What does make a difference is living life in accord with Godly principles, in the way He approves. This leads to a happy personal and family life now, and eternal life later. This requires a change in lifestyle and not just an hour on Sunday or whenever.

Obviously everyone who isn't an atheist or totally apathetic agnostic would say yes--most people get something out of following a spiritual path, otherwise they wouldn't do it.

What a person gets out of it is different for each (peace, love, joy, loss of fear, understanding, heaven, etc...) but it must outweigh what they feel they're missing out on (total free will).

No.
The benefits outweigh the pitfalls in following a tarmac path.

Reality always wins.

Depends on how you look at it. Kabbalah says when we move towards the Light, we automatically draw the Darkness behind us. Which can result in all kinds of simple things going wrong for us. But Warrior Teachings tell us to embrace these things as helpers. Or instead of crying about the misfortunes. See them as helping us to become stronger. Being able to deal with negativity better and more maturely.
Lots of good things happen too!

It depends on whether or not the path has a heart. And watch out for the snakes and goat heads.

Paths to enlightenment have a cost and one who is on such a journey would not find any pitfalls. If they did, then they would find that path not of their calling.....

Yes. What pitfalls? People who disagree with you?? Screw 'em (figuratively, of course).
