It depends on the department and the state certification requirements, research those and see if you qualify. I hope you can become a cop and help us prove to these people that not every one is a lazy dishonest person.

You would have to go through a physical and if this is discovered, it would probably disqualify you because it could not only cause your death or injury, it could also cause harm to your partner or fellow officers.

I would suggest you go to work as a civilian and work either in the Identification Bureau, the Radio Room, as a Polygraph Operator or find another classification somewhere that might interest you. That way you can still work with the officers and be involved in police work, just in a different way. The ID Bureau is very interesting with the new AFIS system so that might be very rewarding to you if you like working with computers. Be prepared to go to court if you work in any of the three jobs above, as they sometimes have to call in the person (especially fingerprint techs) to testify.

We had two officers who were shot and ended up in wheelchairs when the bullet injured their spinal cord. At that time, offices/buildings were not designed to handle the disabled and the one officer was young and new and wanted nothing but to work for the police, his lifelong dream. He went to school and became a Polygraph Operator and is one of the best in the country and travels to various areas to help and teach others. The other officer was a little older when he got shot and later came back as the Police Artist so both were able to fulfill their dreams, just in a different way.

I worked as a civilian for 25 years at a large department in OH and loved it. I also worked 3 months at a small department in AZ ~ I prefer the large one over the smaller one any day although the smaller one was still fairly enjoyable.

Wishing you well ~ God bless

I would suggest that you get a hearing test done, then with the results in hand, check into signing up for the police academy or speak to the local Police Chief. Once you have been in touch with someone in law enforcement, show them your hearing test results & see what the hearing requirements are. If nothing else, they may advise you to get a hearing aid. Now, thanks to new technology, they are so tiny, that they are barely noticeable. My son was on an aircraft carrier & lost a lot of hearing in one ear. This became more evident years after he got out of the Navy. He became a police officer & is now a homicide detective. He was not pressured to get a hearing aid, but wanted one, to be able to tell where sounds are coming from. The hearing aid may help you hear but in my son's case, due to the extreme nerve damage, it won't enable him to hear better but it will tell him what direction voices & sounds are coming from. Do your homework & find out about hearing loss regulations for a future police officer. Best of luck to you. :)

Is your left ear going death? or deaf?

There are requirements to be able to hear. It is a safety concern if you can't hear.

Well you only need to see color. Just kidding. Your hearing won't be a problem. We need good men out there. Go take your exam. If it ever worsened there are alot of jobs in law enforcement that will need you.
