Jesus gave a new commandment abolishing the 10 commandments. The new commandment was to love.
If you show love in all you do then you would not break the old 10 commandments anyway.

The Ten Commandments are THE standard of conduct for ALL people for ALL time. Christians should set the right example by obeying not only the Ten Commandments, but all of the Divine Law.

you don't understand what God did or how God does enterprise. the ten commandments have been portion of the regulation, given to Jews. Of course we don't HAVE to follow the Ten Commandments!! Haven't you heard? We are save by faith alone.
I'm being a little sarcastic here but it seems to me that salvation by faith alone (Sola Fide) is a doctrine that has many holes in it, especially from the Bible itself.
As Catholics we believe that we are saved by God’s grace alone. We can do nothing, apart from God’s grace, to receive the free gift of salvation. We also believe, however, that we have to respond to God’s grace. Protestants believe that, too. However, many Protestants believe that the only response necessary is an act of faith; whereas, Catholics believe a response of faith and works is necessary...or, as the Bible puts it in Galatians 5:6, “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumsion is of any avail, but faith working through love...faith working through love...just as the Church teaches.
So to have faith working through love we will undoubtedly follow the Ten Commandment since these hinges on the two that Christ gave to us to love God and neighbor.
God bless

"Are Christians expected to obey the Ten Commandments?"
No. Though many fool themselves into thinking that way. We are saved by grace through faith because that's the only way we can be saved. Jesus made it clear that we are to think of ourselves as being sinners- hopeless sinners. And only through Him are we covered for our sins.
"Or were the Ten Commandments laws that were abolished at some point?"
They were fulfilled. That is why I can say that I am a sinner, but a saved sinner. I have two natures in me. The first nature is the one I was born with, the sin nature. And the sin nature is evidenced because I do wrong. The second nature was given to me by God through faith in Jesus Christ. That second nature is evidenced because I desire God and His ways - which is against the first nature.
It is normal sinful nature to deny God. It's only natural. It's who we are. Only those who God wants can respond in any other way. God decides who He wants and gives them the ability to respond to Him. Only those people can do that.

Absolutely we are.
Put another way, does it mean a Christian person may break any one of the Ten Commandments—having other gods before Him, coveting, lying, cheating, stealing or bowing down to "graven images"—and yet not be guilty of sin?
One of the terms most often used is "not under law but under GRACE."
But what is grace? When one is "gracious," it usually connotes being gentle, kind and good. Many a parent has named an infant daughter Grace, as one of the virtues of a meek and quiet spirit. But what is the meaning of the word as set forth in the Bible—especially with regard to "not under the law but under grace"?
First, does it mean permission to sin?
"Certainly not!" one might answer. But if it does not mean you have permission to sin, does it mean you do not need to keep God's laws?
Perhaps it is time to go to Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary and find out just what grace is.
Grace is "favor, kindness, mercy, etc." The ecclesiastical usage is "divine mercy or forgiveness."
Then grace means more than just possessing a kind, good and gentle spirit; it connotes the favor and mercy of God—divine mercy or being forgiven.
But being forgiven of what?
Why, being forgiven of having sinned!
But, again, how about another definition? What is sin?
The Bible responds, "Sin is the transgression of the law" (1 John 3:4).
If that is what sin is—if sin is the breaking of God's laws—sin is also failing to keep God's laws!
Technically the word sin from the Hebrew language means "to miss the mark" or "to err." There are sins of comission and sins of omission. A sin which is "committed" is an act of some sort which is directly contrary to the Ten Commandments of God or any of the greater magnifications of the Ten Commandments as illustrated by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, as well as by His life and His teaching.
By omitting to do good, you may also be sinning without realizing it! God says, "To him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin!"
Sin is not only the breaking of the law of God, but it is also failing to keep the law of God!
When one has broken the laws of God, he is said to be a "sinner."

Thou shalt not kill
The Septuagint, the Latin Vulgate (the official Scripture of the Church), and the original Douay-Reims phrase the Fifth Word as "Thou shalt not murder"; later Douay-Reims versions, such as the Challoner, and the King James Bible, etc., phrase it as "Thou shalt not kill." "Thou shalt not murder," however, is the original intent and the meaning of the earliest texts. Catholics, of course, have 2,000 years of Church teaching and the Magisterium to interpret Scripture, and the meaning of the Fifth Commandment is that one is not to take innocent life. It doesn't entail pacifism, ignoring the needs of self-defense and justice, worrying about squashing bugs, etc

The ten commandments are the core of the old covenant between God and Israel.
What happens when either party to a covenant dies? Paul explains this in Romans 7.
God died in the personage of Jesus on the cross.
(Jewish) Christians died to the law through baptism.
Can a covenant continue once the parties to it have died? If so, then everyone who was ever married whose mate died and they remarried committed adultery!
