Karma is the belief that you are rewarded by the good you do and are punished by the bad. Improve your karma by doing those things that you believe are good and avoiding doing those things that you believe are bad.
Of course good/bad are impossible to determine from other peoples definitions, so it is your personal belief system that must guide you.

Bad karma comes in two forms ... if you believe in reincarnation, then 'karma' is what you did in your past lives that needs to be 'worked out' in this life. If you are a Christian or belong to another religion, 'bad karma' is just doing bad things. When a person does something bad, usually something bad happens to them ... sometimes that same day, in other instances not for years.
You CAN get 'rid' of bad karma by consciously being good and doing good for others ... because the whole idea of karma is that what you 'give' is what you 'get' from life.

Karma, basically, means what goes around comes around. This means whatever you do, good or bad, will come back on you an indefinite number of times.
Bad karma means that you have done something bad, and that in turn, something bad will/is happen/ing to you. Unfortunately, there is no way of ridding yourself of it. The best thing you can do is to treat people how you want to be treated and you will be treated well in return.
This is what we Traditional (non-wiccan/heathen/pagan) Witches believe, only we call it "retribution" or "The Law of Return" instead of the Eastern term "karma."
Eastern religions teach that bad karma is being punished for something you've done in a previous lifetime, but witches such as myself believe that bad karma results from something bad you've done in your current life.

The idea of "good" karma and "bad" karma is really a drastic oversimplification of the karma system. There are all sorts of different levels of karma (your familial karma, your astrological karma, your karma from past-lives, etc), but basically they all work on the cause-effect level.
"Bad" karma would generally anything that you did that had a negative effect on someone or something (including yourself). Remember also that effects of actions ripple outwards, like when a stone is dropped into the water. If you say something that makes one person mad ("bad" karma for you) , that person may go on to gossip about you ("bad" karma for them, and more "bad" karma for you because you caused the state that drove them to gossip), and then that person may feel angry and say or think something unpleasant ("bad" karma for them, more "bad" karma for the person who started gossiping, and MORE "bad" karma for you for being the catalyst).
There's really no way to "get rid" of bad karma. Things have to be balanced out, and doing that effectively may well be impossible in this lifetime. Much of our circumstances in this lifetime have been heavily influenced by the karmic debt that we've been carrying through from past lives. But, having karma of ANY kind, bad or good, will keep you returning for new incarnations.
The goal of yogic practices of Hinduism and of Buddhism is to learn to be very aware of every word, deed and action, to live completely in according with the natural flow of the Universe and one's own Divine nature (acheiving this state of being is often called "enlightenment"), creating no new karma (good or bad) for yourself and others. A very large part of this is learning to be completely unattached to one's actions, and to no longer react emotionally to events around you (which is another gross simplification of the actual process I'm trying to describe). Only when one ceases to leave karmic footprints are then believed to be freed from the Wheel of Rebirth.
So, the best thing to start doing to start balancing out karma, is to get involved with some sort of spiritual development so that you can begin to be more self-aware and develop non-attatchment. Generally start trying to live as a better person (the Eightfold Path of Buddhism is a good pattern for this - http://www.thebigview.com/buddhism/eightfoldpath.html), but try not to be attached to the fact that you're "doing good".
This is a process that will likely take you lifetimes to master, so be patient with yourself. Just know that if you really commit to the undertaking, that you can always pick up where you left off in the future...and you'll eventually get there!

Bad karma is a misnomer. Karma are the reactions to one's actions, in a cosmically just world.

I'm sure this is a twisted version of karma, but I think it's when you create negative energy by doing things you know are harmful/wrong to others. Not sure there's any way to get rid of it completely. But, you can do penance by trying to right your wrongs and by trying to be a better person in general. Ever see the show "my name is earl"?
