I disagree with all the posters who said that your dream has to do with school shootings, the news, your meals, or your hidden fears of being shot.
The shooting in your dream is symbolic of an attack on you, but probably not a physical attack - more likely some kind of emotional attack.
The school setting in your dream signifies a feeling of what your experience in school was like and the kind of relationships you had with the friends in your dream. So it could be one of innocence, of freedom, or learning, of fun, of stress - it depends on you.
When you have a recurring dream, your suboncscious is trying to tell you something. You will keep having the dream until you get the message - then it will stop.
The fact that your dream morphed from a situation where others were being hurt into one where you were hurt indicates that you have not dealt with the issue that the dream represents, and has therefore become more a threat to you.
It is interesting too that there is always a warning that the shooting is about to start. This shows that even though you know some kind of upset will occur, but you are still not taking the bull by the horns to deal with whatever the issue is.
It's hard to say more without knowing more about you, but that last poster was more on the money than any of the others.

It seems to me that you are trying to warn yourself about a situation in your waking life that could be potentially hurtful, and that there is a relationship between something going on in your waking life, where you may have had a similar experience in high school that you resolved, and now the same situation has come up again (at work maybe), and you need to draw some lessons from the similar problem that took place in school in order to avert a disaster in your present day life. That you got shot in this dream instead of getting away as you usually do, could indicate that the situation in your waking life is accelerating, and you need to learn the right way to deal with it, before it gets out of hand. We are presented with the same lessons throughout our lives until we learn how to deal with the lesson in question, by understanding the situation, and learning to change our attitude or approach for a better result. If you were presented with a situation in school, and didn't learn what you needed to learn from it, then it may have been presented again, and you are trying to warn yourself to resolve it better this time. It doesn't have anything to do with school shootings, or that anyone around you is going to go postal, or having a fear of guns, or anything like that.... you may perhaps be feeling like a target to a co worker or supervisor, or you may be interpreting valid concerns on the part of another as picking on you, and need to adjust your attitude now that you are in the so called real world...
Edit: since I posted, you have added details that you are having some issues that you need to deal with, but you have pushed them aside, it seems you are aware you have issues, and what those issues are. The same issues were probably presented to you in high school as well, or possibly the issues originated there. You already know what you need to do, and when you have done it, these dreams will stop....

dreams are really complicated. not all of them have a meaning. whatever u do, see or hear, or think of during the day, can present itself at night in ur dreams. it doesn't always make sense though. but i reckon because u had this dream, and u've been trying to make sense of it or it affected u somehow when u dreamed it the first time, it's stuck in your unconcious mind and it comes to u at night when u sleep.
dreams as is said r affected by everything. even when u sleep your senses are awake, any smell, sound, touch or even light, can change/affect it.
my suggestion is watch something light (like a comedy or kids movie) before u sleep next time. or listen to some relaxing music, that way ur thoughts will be elsewhere. don't eat before sleeping and don't go to bed hungry.
your fiance is probebly right about seeing something on the news. it's just not in your concious thoughts.
Good Luck

Do you happen to live in Columbine? But seriously, you have some underlying issues and fears about such things. Kind of like a person who is afraid of heights always dreaming that they or someone else is falling. I think you need to make an effort to think about your happy place ( where ever that is ) every night before you go to sleep and maybe change the people and activities that take place in your imaginary realm. I think your bad dreams will go away in a matter of days.

Find a gun in youre dream. Shoot him. You can defeat anything. Even if in real life you had a gun you could do it. You dont want deja vu. Bring pepper spray to school with you. It shoots far AND makes ppl misfire. Practice with the pepper spray. Keep it with you. This will make you confident in the real world. And in your dreams youll also have the pepper spray. If you sense the dream coming on than warn ppl right away before the start moving.

You should call him your "fiance" not finance because that can come across as wrong. Fact of the matter is our dreams are all based on our experiences and thoughts about certain topics prior to going to sleep. If you want to avoid a dream don't bother interpreting it because it will keep reoccuring, and that is not what you want. It is best if you don't mention it and with time your brain will put those thoughts aside, the more you think about it the more it will reoccur when you dream. You probably have a fear of getting shot, surprise! and that causes you to panic in your sleep when your mind comes across this topic, where as you consider other topics less "harmful", so even when you dream of these scenarios, you forget them when you wake up.

Any type of vehicle represents our life's journey. Roads represent the path we are traveling on in our life. This dream is saying that you don't know how to get through your life. You want to live your life to the fullest because you're in the car, behind the wheel, but you are not able to drive, or drive well. Plus you are always scared and usually you are alone. In real life, even if we have others with us, the others cannot drive our car, only we can do that. There is something in your life that is scaring you and preventing you from successfully doing what it is you want to do. You have to be the one to "learn how to drive" whether on your own or taking lessons, lol (like going to school, getting a different job, moving to a new city, etc). Only you can do this for yourself. Meditate on your situation and find a path that suits you. You will find that in time you will be driving smoothly.

It feels like you may be experiencing a bit of secret (or not so secret) anxiety/fear related to leaving high school. Everyone struggles with the transition from highschool to college, life, whatever. If you miss your friends, get in touch with them. Get a plan together for the future and take steps to make it happen. Revisit your highschool when it's appropriate; say hi to your favorite teachers/employees. Settle old arguments and bad vibes with people you went to school with and get going on a new track... and watch the bad dream disappear.

Maybe there was a shooting at your school, or a school near it, and you're remembering it in different ways? I mean, once I had a dream that I was being kidnapped, and beheaded (I was only a kid when I dreamt this, but I haven't forgotten it).. it was so real!
I understand how you feel. I don't think you're watching the news too much, maybe you're just scared that a shooting will happen soon.

Interesting question, Leslie.
I too have recurring dreams of places and events that I know I have not been to or experienced..
Perhaps you saw one item on gun crime at school that affected you. Stuck in the mind.
It would then "play-back" your thoughts in the dream.
I keep going to this rural airport in dreams, whereby I know it is near Ipswich. where I don't live, and a crash always occurs to the light aircraft in front.
Is that premonition ?
Fine for a one-off dream, but why 6-8 times ?
Always the same.
So I don't know, but you are not alone.
