Sounds like a romantic interest to this old fella. In order to find out his true meaning however you would be best to sit down with him soon and have a good heart to heart. Sounds like you are both mature and have known each other for a while so should be able to be 100% honest with one and other. Do not hold back and be honest even if you are not both on the same page, as being friends nobody should be hurt by what is said. Sounds romantic to me. Something you did, or the way you looked, or the way he's thinking about you made him come to the conclusion that you mean more than just a friend to him. He just doesn't have a very good way of saying he loves you, and maybe that's out of fear of saying so because he may be afraid you don't feel the same about him.
