I plan to either get my stomach stapled to help me lose weight and become healthy, or forgo the surgury and try my luck on the competitive eating circuit.

That was funny. I have friends that did both. The excess skin that's left over has to be dealt with and most insurance won't cover that! The surgery is tough but my buddy went from 400 and now he is 250(2 years later) you must get mentally and physically prepared. there is light at the end of the tunnel. He had his done in Morristown NJ

My father in law is doing the surgery. He is 6'4" and like 450 lbs. The surgery is no joke - it will suck. The long term benefits are simply amazing.

If you have amazing amounts of will power - you can forgo the surgery and simply eat less...which is much easier said then done. If you can get the surgery covered by insurance or money isnt an issue - I would go down that road. It is surgery - they will tell you its minimal invasive - which it is - buts it still real surgery.
