AFTER reading all of the answers above me...I can tell you exactly what is going on here...this person has what is called:
MUNCHHAUSEN SYNDROME....
the person craves attention or sympathy & they do NOT care how they get it or who they hurt...
and this from my experience is a very sick person...even admitting they lied, is a cry for attention...BE CAREFUL & don't get sucked in to their world...

I went behind and fact checked Calvin Woodward's report. I went to the Fortune 500 website to check his numbers. Health Insurers actually rank 33rd and not 35th. Health Insurers earned 2.5% profit in 2008 not 2% When you calculate it out it equals a profit of over 600 billion dollars. Upon further investigation I have found that Calvin Woodward's fact checking stories are always skewed against the Democratic agenda. Don't believe everything you read.

there are alot of answers offered here, attention and sympathy mostly
yet, a person can actually get a disease -first by thinking it sycosomatic-develop the sympoms and their body can even accomodate and make them prone to that illness.
are you also sure they were not diagnosed with it?
I have looked for sympathy too, and I am not perfect, I have back slid 3 times-telling Jesus I didnt want to witness or be 'used'anymore, and all 3 of those days i was crying before days end, asking Jesus to use me to be a witness again. I started over, each time i lost the power of Jesus, and began again like a baby believer in Jesus.
Romans 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God unto salvation to the Jew &all,
praying concerning this person and also for you, David

Others' prejudice causes people to hide their health issues. Especially to get into a good career or job, etc.
The issue of disability income catches liars in the other direction, hidng their abilities.
Munchausen's syndrome is a different sort of lie than your question asked. It is a lie made true!!!
Ultimately, once such a parent has given their child a health problem, it is true that they have this injury. The only lie is how they got in that condition.

There are chronic lairs out there. I have read that these people usually have never felt important in their life or for some reason or another (usually to do with childhood) feel they are not worthy of attention as they are so they cook up schemes that they feel will make them worthy of attention and sympathy. Have you ever seen that movie "The Night Listener"? It touches on it.

They probably see their own life as boring and uninteresting and see that as a way to make thier life seem more interesting and exciting. Unfortunately, they fail to see how living a lie can give that lie a life all of its own and take one over completely. that person FAILS to understand that not ONLY is HE the one to get hurtr but the damge spreads FAR beyond his OWN narrow range of vision into areas that are totally unforseen.

They want attention and need to feel important and loved. People lie for all kinds of reasons but when they lie about their health they need to be loved and feel they belong. Comfort the person and explain you love them even though they are not sick. They will be relieved that they can be honest and still be worthy of your love.

They might actually believe it for some reason...Some people think they can diganose themself and know more than their doctor.....because they might have a symtom or heard about something that feel is not known yet
If they believe they do NOT have it...They are just NEEDING attention at all costs....They are probably lonely....and or scared of dying and looking for friendship ... GOOD LUCK and be thankful they DO NOT have it....

Kerilyn nailed it. Munchausen's syndrome it is. Muchausen's by proxy is another manisfestation, where parents (usually the mother) will inflict injuries on their children in order to seek medical attention. It's all very sad, and a form of mental illness.

In that case I supect they are looking for attention. And like having people feel sorry for them. but, in observation, a lot of these people do come down with diseases that eventually kill them, Maybe because they have a desire to be ill. I don't know.
