Kim, I been on effexor xr since 2002 for depression an suicidal. It totaly has helped changed my life positvely, I am on a HIGH dose daily.
It works on 2 brain chemicals instead of 1 like meds such as Prozac. In some folks it doesn't have total effect till they at 200mg dose. But as others stated meds affect folks differently.
things you need to be aware of
1==your blood presure might increase
2== you need blood test for liver function as required by Dr.
3== its one the worst meds to with draw from at high doseage.
Please don't let any these worry you about takeing it, for me its worth the risk compared to doing with out it.
An no it hasn't affected my appetite or increased my weight.

I'm on 75mg in the morning and 150mg at night, which is the maximum dose. It has helped me a lot, it hasn't cured my depression, and I still have bad days, but it's made things a lot easier and I feel a lot better than I did a couple of years ago. It can cause increased appetite, but also by relieving the symptoms of depression your appetite will naturally increase. If you're worried about putting on weight, just be sensible about what you eat.

Hello Kim
75mg of Effexor XL in the morning is a low dose so lets hope you dont experience too many side effects.
Effexor is Venlafaxine and it is a very powerfull antidepressant. It has helped many people.
Its effects vary from person to person, some find it makes them hungry, some find the oppersite and loose loads of weight on it!!
You doctor has decided to put you on Effexor as you are suffering from the symptoms of depression, he may decide to increase the dose depending on how you respond.
As I say, it is a very effective medicine and lets hope it does the trick for you and you feel better soon.
Contact me if I can help further.

Effexor helps me a lot. From the beginning I found it caused a loss of appetite for me. I'm now on 225 mg.

I have been prescribed Effexor before, unfortunately it didn't suit me-I suffered panic attacks and felt really lousy. But as with all antidepressants, they affect us all differently. I was taken off Efexor and put on Cipralex, which suits me really well. I know to ask the GP for it now instead of them trying me on different ones. I wasn't on it long enough for it to increase my appetitebut have never noticed this on the Cipralex. My advice would be to see your GP if you notice any unwelcome side effects and also have someone who you can talk to-this helps me as much as the meds. Good luck, hope you are feeling better soon.

yes I have, actually it was reallly bad for me and I had to go on paxil but I remember effexor xr gave me hallucinations and made me very sick.
Each med is different for everyone so it might be fine for you.
