I have some paintings and I'm trying to find out if they're by a known artist but I don't know how you can tell or how to find out. I'm wondering if there's somewhere you can go online to find out stuff like this. Thanks

If they are on this site ... http://www.artcyclopedia.com/history/index.html
Then they are valuable!

Look for a signature on the front of the canvas. This might not be visible if it's an old painting and hasn't been cleaned for a long time. Getting it professionally done is expensive but could be worth the money.

Otherwise, look for something on the back of the canvas, or on the frame. If it's a lost masterpiece, you could be in for some serious money. If it just turns out to be a nice painting, well, at least you can appreciate it properly after a professional cleaning.

I can't tell you how much easier your search will be if you have the artists' names.

I know, I know, it sounds like a very elementary thing. But you'd be surprised at the number of questions we get here that go something like this:

"Can't make out the signature---looks like 'Kaqlbntysnert'---anyone know this artist?"
