I'd say threats of violence are simpler, and also useful if you're in a hurry and the person you want to control isn't religious.
Religion is probably more effective though, especially if you have time to indoctrinate a generation from childhood. Religion also makes it easier to control large groups. If a group is aware that you couldn't reasonably control them with force then threats become much less useful.

I think the only way to control someone is if you have a gun, or a knife.
God doens't control us, or anyone else. As Christians, we have free will and CHOOSE to believe in Him and worship Him. It's sad that you choose not to.

Threats of violence are nothing when compared to threats of pain when you die.
That's how religion has been controlling people for thousands of years...
"Believe my way or when you die, you'll suffer the consequences of your disbelief".
See how that works???

Religion is the best way, because it includes threats of violence.

Some people do both and actually call themselves Christian in the process. So I guess both used together is the best way. It seems to work for many fundamentalists.
