They are one and the same.
"Silencer" is the commonly used, (but inaccurate), term for a sound supressor.

First, the correct terminology for the device is 'Suppressor', NOT 'silencer', at least not according to the Federal gov. and the U.S. military.
'Silencer' is a word perpetuated by Hollywierd movie 'experts', gangsta thugs, and other types.
A suppressor works exactly the same manner as the muffler on a car or motorcycle, by baffling or 'trapping' the sound waves produced by the burning (exploding) powder charge in firing the round of ammunition.
Suppressors are completely LEGAL for ANY qualified citizen to purchase & possess!
To purchase a suppressor equipped weapon, you can obtain all info and related paperwork from any reputable Class 3 weapons dealer. There are several at:
http://www.gunbroker.com
Just go to their site & run a search for 'Suppressor'.
The process is simply submitting the proper papaerwork to the BATFE, passing a background check conducted by these gents, and paying a $200 transfer stamp tax upon receiving the device from the dealer.

1st, this is criminal to make your very own, in case you fill out the BATFE form and placed up your layout first. 2d, do no longer shop on with the lame advice of persons who propose putting a potato or different obstruction on the top of your barrel. this could reason the firearm or maybe a BB gun to fail catastrophically and harm or kill somebody. third, a soda bottle etc won't cut back the sound of even a .22 rifle. Fourth, there is not any such factor as a "silencer" different than in Hollywood movies. A "Suppressor" will cut back the sound of the weapon firing, yet till you employ subsonic ammo, the bullet will nonetheless sound comparable to it breaks the sound barrier. finally, production a hand-crafted suppressor is a severe crime, and asking this form of question on a public website like this one, the place the government video show contraptions it very heavily, is a silly factor to do, because it now places you on their radar show. shoot secure (and criminal)

Silencers, suppressors and moderators all do the same thing; they reduce the noise coming from the muzzle of a firearm. The words suppressor and moderator more accurately describe what they do. In the USA the word silencer is a legal term applying to devices or parts intended to reduce the report of a firearm. It was also a marketing term coined by Maxim when he sold his first silencers over one hundred years ago.

A good silencer will reduce noise by about 20-30 decibels (100 to 1000 times), but do not expect any suppressed firearm to be less than 117 decibels. A suppressor can be made for any firearm including high powered rifles. Subsonic ammo usually works significantly better than high speed ammo due to the smaller powder charge. The sonic boom created by supersonic ammo is much less noisy than the muzzle blast.

Suppressors are legal for civilians to own in most states without a license or permit. You must be at least 18 to make, and 21 to buy. Federal law requires that a person receive BATFE authorization prior to making or receiving a silencer. This is in the form of a tax stamp. For a person to get this tax stamp requires an application form signed by the local sheriff, fingerprints, mug shots and a check for the $200 tax. You must also live in one of the states that allow civilian ownership. If the local sheriff will not sign, then it is a simple matter to form a trust or non-profit corp. to own the suppressor instead.

It is nearly impossible to completely 'silence' a gun shot. You could possibly wrap the entire firearm in blankets to silence it, but you can see how awkward that would be.

A sound suppressor changes the tone of a discharging gun to call less attention to it. I have fired a suppressed Beretta 9mm and even with subsonic ammunition I was not impressed. It still sounded like a gunshot to me, only not as loud. The suppressor was bulky and oil had to be added to it so it would 'work.' Only in the James Bond movies do gun silencers the size of a champagne cork screw onto the end of a pistol and completely damp the sound.

That said there is the matter of legalese concerning suppressors. Check w/your nearest BATF for details.

Best.

I got the chance to fire a Kimber .45 with a Surefire suppressor. A customer came in to get a reduced power recoil spring because the gun didn't cycle properly with the suppressor on. I test fired it in the basement and I didn't wear hearing protection.

BIG MISTAKE.

And yes, he had his paperwork with him.

Anyone who wants a quiet pistol will buy a .22LR.

A suppressor is the correct term.

The suppressor works by trapping the gasses, which reduces the sound and the velocity of the round. However, if the round leaves the barrel at supersonic speed there will be a loud crack whereas the use of subsonic ammo greatly reduces the report.

Suppressors are silencers just most people refer to them by the hollywood name silencer given in movies. There is nothing silent about a suppressed rifle or pistol. The suppressor does one thing, it changes the speed of the escaping gases which lowers the db's but does not make it silent. It does however lower recoil and allow shooting inside with out the use of hearing protection. Also allows the shooting of wild dogs without causing to much of a stir in the middle of the night. A suppressor is legal to own in most states and requires special permitting and tax stamps to own. Their is also a wait period the first time you buy one of many months. A legal suppressor has never been used in a robbery, hit style murder to date. It's the hollywood hype that has made this very useful tool of hunters and shooters hard to purchase legally. Of course for one to purchase one illegally is very simple with no wait and no paperwork, oh yeah and illegal suppressors can be bought in states that don't allow legal ones. This is gun control at work. Giving the criminals the means and preventing the law respecting the ability of ownership.

There is no such thing as a silencer, only suppressor. Suppressors can only lower the decibel level not totally eliminate it. In a lot of states as long as you have the proper permits for one you can legally own a suppressor.

"silencer" is a hollywood movie term. sound suppressor is the industry term. both are a can that goes on the end where the bullets come out.

Silencers & Suppressors do the same thing but they differ in their ability to reduce noise. An effective Silencer will only reduce the audible noise level to 125-130 decibels. A Suppressor even less. The gun report can still be heard, though greatly reduced.

You have to be 21 years old here in the U.S. and reside in one of the following states that allow civilian ownership of a Silencer/Suppressor. You also need to fill out a BATF (Bureau of Alcohol,Tabacco & Firearms) form/application to be issued a permit to own one. You must also pay a $200 Tax Stamp Fee, and submit your fingerprints and submit to a background check as part of the approval process.

It is legal in these states to possess a Silencer/Suppressor
AL,AK,AR,AZ,CO,CT,FL,GA,ID,KY,IN,ME,LA,
ME,MD,MS,MT,NE,ND,NV,NH,NC,OH,OK,OR,PA
SC,SD,TN,TX,UT,VA,WA,WV,WI,WY
IN,LA,OK,PA,OR

Once approved you can purchase a silencer/suppressor thru a Class III License Dealer...
