If you want a more natural setting than a zoo you could try a drive along Wellington road , to the east of Melbourne, and visit Lysterfield Park or Cardinia Reservoir Park. The latter is also great for walks and a barbie.

The best place to spot kangaroos is in the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney and outside of Melbourne, about a half hour away towards the coast.

The Royal National Park to the south of Sydney, and Kuringai NP to its north have many wallabies (small kangaroos). Garigal National Park around the upper reaches of Middle Harbour also has wallabies. I often see wallaby road killl on my daily commute along the Wakehurst Parkway between Narrabeen and Frenchs Forest, which are two Sydney suburbs. There is also a mob of eastern grey kangaroos on the site of a former munitions factory out west somewhere.
However, the wallabies are shy. You don't often see them.

Kangaroos do live in some suburban areas of Melbourne, but to be sure of seeing some, catch a tram to the Melbourne Zoo, Parkville, where there is a naturalistic setting with kangas, emus, and other Australian wildlife wandering freely.

You can catch a short 5 minute ferry ride from the wharf at the harbour bridge, to Taronga Zoo, where u can walk through a kangaroo enclosement. When I was in Oz, we saw them in the wild in Emerald Beach, NSW. In a holiday park i saw 2 kangaroos bound past me, so got the torch out and i was 4 ft away from them! the bst thing was, they were sooo tame and a lil joey even stuck its head outta the mums pouch!

You won't see wild kangaroos hopping around big cities. Just as you won't see deers walking around New York city. You might see some as you go out to the outer suburbs near bushlands.
I see wild kangaroo everyday when I drive to and from work. Hundred of them - eating in the samepaddock as the horses.
You might want to see them but you sure DON'T want to get near them. They are dangerous! Theie claws can rip you open and their hind legs can seriously hurt you with one kick.

How cute!
You would need to go out to more rural or bushland areas to see them, on the outskirts of the cities.
Keep your eyes peeled, its probably easier to spot dead ones on the side of the road!

i saw more in and around Melborne and between Melborne and Adelaide than any other place in australia.
That as well... koala bears!
They are more tammed than i thought.
Try the great Ocean road trip... tours
you'll see plenty of both species!
good luck
